Fanwood was chartered in 1817 and is the second oldest school for the Deaf in the United States. The school sits on a 77-acre lot that used to be an apple farm that was originally purchased by the school in 1934. The school began in NYC in the Alms House behind City Hall and after three different relocations the school has remained in White Plains NY area for over 80 years and celebrated it's 200th Anniversary in 2017.

NYSD 2nd and 3rd graders wrapped up their forces and motion unit with hands-on magnet play! ๐Ÿงฒ They explored how forces work from a distance and how the north and south poles interact. Using iron filings, they observed how opposite poles attract and like poles repel. What a fun way to bring science to life!

NYSD Middle school students took on NTID Youth Programs RIT/NTID Tiger Science Challenge with excitement, crafting unique devices to protect their eggs in a thrilling egg-drop experiment. Dropped from heights of 20 to 30 feet, the eggs faced a true test of the students' creativity and engineering skills!

Last week, NYSD's Kindergarteners explored the letter Uu, practiced counting, and learned all about ground transportation like cars, trucks, and bicycles! They also started a word wall and had a special character education lesson focused on feelings. ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿšฒ

Fanwood 9th graders got creative in their ceramics unit! They crafted cylinder slab mugs, adding fun and quirky faces to each piece. This hands-on project helped them learn the art of working with clay, from shaping to designing. Great job, artists!

Congratulations to Fanwood's recent TWIST award recipients! These students modeled our positive behavior expectations by being Thoughtful, Wise, Independent, Safe, and working Together as a team. Great job!

The TWIST acronym is a perfect way for Fanwood students to remember to use the positive behaviors, as it relates to TORNADOES, which is our mascot...Go Tornadoes!

Fanwood's SEEDS Deaf Infant Program playgroup had a fantastic day exploring the great outdoors! Parents and babies enjoyed the beauty of leaves and experienced playful, language-rich activities to support early learning. NYSD is proud of High School Math teacher, Stefanie Stamatis, who represented Fanwood at Rochester Institute of Technology's NTID Regional STEM Center and DeafTEC Math and Science conference earlier this week.
