Fanwood was chartered in 1817 and is the second oldest school for the Deaf in the United States. The school sits on a 77-acre lot that used to be an apple farm that was originally purchased by the school in 1934. The school began in NYC in the Alms House behind City Hall and after three different relocations the school has remained in White Plains NY area for over 80 years and celebrated it's 200th Anniversary in 2017.

It's here and today is the day! Right now, our student athletes are out on campus washing cars from 9:00am to 3:30pm, giving it their all for a season they worked hard to earn.

Come see them in action, get a clean car, and help cover the cost of travel, lodging, and everything else that makes their season possible.

Tomorrow's the day!

This Saturday, September 19th from 9:00am to 3:30pm, our student athletes will be right here on campus washing cars, because they want to compete for NYSD.

Every dollar raised helps them travel to meets and games, stay overnight for tournaments, and have what they need to represent their school. Come say hello, get a clean car, and make a student athlete's season possible.

Fanwood was filled with energy as we welcomed parents and families back to campus to kick-off the new school year. Families had the chance to learn more about what is coming this year, receive updates, and meet staff members. We wrapped up the day with a Fanwood Family school wide lunch. It was wonderful to celebrate together!

Thank you to all the parents and families who joined us, and thank you to our staff members for making the day so special for everyone. It's going to be a great year!

New York School for the Deaf pauses today to honor and remember the lives lost twenty five years ago on September 11, 2001, along with the families and heroes whose lives were forever changed by that day. Now, just as it did then, the Fanwood community carries forward compassion, strength, and hope. We stand together in reflection, resilience, and unity.

Welcome back, Fanwood! Today we welcomed our students back to campus for the first day of the new school year. The hallways were full of smiling faces as students reunited with friends after a summer apart, catching up and sharing stories from their summer break.

A huge thank you to our staff members, who spent several days preparing classrooms, planning lessons, and getting every corner of campus ready to welcome our students home. Your hard work behind the scenes made today possible.

Here's to a wonderful year ahead!

Join us for the first ASL Chat of the year on Friday, September 11, 2026 at 4:30pm. Everyone is welcome, whether you are Deaf, hearing, or learning ASL. We will meet the second Friday of every month at 4:30pm.
