September is synonymous with going back to school. By now, most students are settling into new class schedules and living environments. Hopefully, each student has taken the time to review individual safety protocols provided by their college or university! The Fall semester is a particularly vulnerable time for college freshmen, so don't forget these safety tips below!

POC was on the town with student safety information at National Night Out hosted by White Plains Police Department!
The weather was stellar and the community enjoyed games, music, food and plethora of information put out by a multitude of non-for-profit organizations! Well done! ☮️

Wishing you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!

It's hard to believe that we will soon be welcoming the arrival of fall and the 2022-2023 school year! For most, that means shopping for school supplies, comforters, and books for your college bound student. It’s an exciting time, especially for incoming freshmen, and often parents are challenged with logistics, travel and emotional drop-offs in college towns across the USA! While you’re packing up your student for the dorm or off-campus apartment, please make sure to fit in a discussion about personal safety. POC wants every student to be safe while enjoying their college experience. We believe that knowledge is power and that taking just a few minutes to raise safety awareness, will help reduce the risk of students becoming victims of crime.

In order to help facilitate these conversations, POC has included some links in our newsletter and on our website that include information about personal safety, safety in your apartment, ride sharing, along with a checklist to review when moving into a new neighborhood or campus setting. We’ve added a medical emergency checklist from our friends at College911 and hope that you have asked your college/university to provide policy and procedure on campus alerts, fire safety and crime statistics in the community.

Other more sensitive topics students and families should explore include: substance use and mental health (SAMHSA), sexual assault (RAINN), dating violence (Break The Cycle), hazing (Stop Hazing), gun violence (CDC-Firearm Violence Prevention), and su***de prevention (988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline). Students should know where to get help and find resources. Currently, there are many online sites, hotlines, and organizations that can help educate students and families about each area of concern. We have identified some reliable links and numbers for your convenience.

Our goal is not to create a culture of fear, but rather to build a sense of empowerment, strength and security...through knowledge!

Wishing you a safe and productive school year!
Peace Out!

It's been 17 Years. And we're still working to continue her legacy!

Reflections from Kristen Bonistall:
“May 1st is a day that friends and family of Lindsey Bonistall will never forget. As we mourn the horrendous loss of Lindsey’s life on this day, we are also comforted by the incredible legacy created in her memory…PEACE OUTside Campus, The Lindsey M. Bonistall Foundation.

Since its inception in July 2005, PEACE OUTside Campus has advocated for student safety and shared its message with over 15,000 students, parents and educators..." Read more at peaceoutsidecampus.org.
