It's hard to believe that we will soon be welcoming the arrival of fall and the 2022-2023 school year! For most, that means shopping for school supplies, comforters, and books for your college bound student. It’s an exciting time, especially for incoming freshmen, and often parents are challenged with logistics, travel and emotional drop-offs in college towns across the USA! While you’re packing up your student for the dorm or off-campus apartment, please make sure to fit in a discussion about personal safety. POC wants every student to be safe while enjoying their college experience. We believe that knowledge is power and that taking just a few minutes to raise safety awareness, will help reduce the risk of students becoming victims of crime.

In order to help facilitate these conversations, POC has included some links in our newsletter and on our website that include information about personal safety, safety in your apartment, ride sharing, along with a checklist to review when moving into a new neighborhood or campus setting. We’ve added a medical emergency checklist from our friends at College911 and hope that you have asked your college/university to provide policy and procedure on campus alerts, fire safety and crime statistics in the community.

Other more sensitive topics students and families should explore include: substance use and mental health (SAMHSA), sexual assault (RAINN), dating violence (Break The Cycle), hazing (Stop Hazing), gun violence (CDC-Firearm Violence Prevention), and su***de prevention (988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline). Students should know where to get help and find resources. Currently, there are many online sites, hotlines, and organizations that can help educate students and families about each area of concern. We have identified some reliable links and numbers for your convenience.

Our goal is not to create a culture of fear, but rather to build a sense of empowerment, strength and security...through knowledge!

Wishing you a safe and productive school year!
Peace Out!

Our 2020 Lindsey M. Bonistall Research Fellow, RaeAnn Anderson, has not let Covid stop her research! Here's an update:

"Our team has expanded to include graduate and undergraduate students mentored by Drs. Anderson and Cole, including members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the Sisseton Washpeton Oyate and Dakota, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, and the Mcskoke Nation. In October 2020, our team received a grant from the state of North Dakota to expand our study to include a survey of Indigenous college students across the states of North Dakota and Oklahoma on what they want to see in r**e reduction programs. We have worked with an Indigenous artist to produce advertising and recently received IRB approval to collect the survey data. We hope to begin recruitment soon! Thank you for all the support."
