I've said to friends but maybe never written here that our fight here in 2018 was a quashed insurrection, not a lost campaign. And the fight goes on. After the BS in Iowa, I'm reminded of that again.

I'm sharing the latest statement by the President of the United States. I'd love to offer insight off my service as a diplomat in Iraq but the entire Iraq discussion is a smokescreen for what's really afoot. This latest unconstitutional act of war has nothing to do with Iraq or Iran or even terrorism. But why listen to me? Just listen to the president.

This'll be our year, Bernie. It must be.

I have so much to say about the warmongering madness in Iraq; about the student loans and health debts pulling a generation of my dearest friends underwater; about the contemporaries of mine who sold their souls and our congressional seats to predatory profiteers.

I'd say it as a citizen, as a dad, as a diplomat. But I'll speak instead this New Year as a U.S. history teacher hitting the Gilded Age and Progressive Era in the curriculum right around now:

Our darkest and most hopeful moments as a nation have always been intertwined. This is one of those times.

Now I couldn't help but laugh when the thudding "Back in Black" electric guitars kicked in yesterday as the white-haired leader of our progressive movement took the stage in Queens, but I loved it anyway, and so did the family.

At the end of his speech, when the rock music had died down, he asked us all to look at each other, and we did. He asked questions everyone who hasn't joined this movement should answer:

"Are you willing to fight for young people drowning in student debt even if you are not?

"Are you willing to fight to ensure that every American has health care as a human right even if you have good health care?

"Are you willing to fight for frightened immigrant neighbors even if you are native born?”
