“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” – Margaret Fuller
✨
Whether it’s in a chair, on the floor, upside down, or right side up... reading is reading. Encourage your littles to read.. ANYTHING!
📚
Creating these lifelong skills and passion will breed the future leaders of the world.

This little one found her passion in everything . Here she is annotating for a research project we did together.

📚 Tip No. 3: Interest drives motivation.
So...Read a GOOD book!
Any adult knows that sometimes we have to read things were just not into, but when it comes to kids and developing a love for reading, finding a good book is not only helpful but imperative.
💤
The time will come when your child will HAVE to read a dry text, or classic novel, but right now the best thing you can do is give them choice. Introduce them to a wide range of texts and dive into the ones they gravitate towards! If it’s a series, well you’ve hit the jackpot!
👓
Some great recommendations for series books for elementary aged kiddos are: The Magic Tree House by Mary Pope Osborne, Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown, Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park, I Survived by Lauren Tarshis, or the Who was...? Series by various authors.
✨
Regardless of what your kids read, if they’re interested they’re bound to grow their reading skills... you can always pivot and introduce texts of your choosing after they’ve become a “reader.” Happy reading!

📚 Tip No. 2: ACCESS.
We humans tend to take the path of least resistance. If something seems unobtainable or the energy we have to exert exceeds our perceived payout, we just don’t do it. So it’s no surprise, our littles do the same!
💥 Making texts readily available and accessible to our kids is the single easiest thing we can do to help them become readers.
📖 Studies have shown for decades that simply providing age-appropriate texts critically impacts reading acquisition. Louis Harris goes as far as to say “access to age-appropriate books has shown to nearly TRIPLE interest in reading within months.”
🤯 In a digital age, it is still so important to provide printed texts to our kids. So grab the bins, buckets, shelves, baskets, or crates and get to curating mini libraries for each room your littles spend time in, I promise you won’t regret it!

This Wednesday’s word is Phoneme... these little guys pack a huge 🥊
📚
maybe you’ve heard “phonemic awareness,” “phonics,” “phonetic principles,” all of these are derived from the basic term “phoneme.”
🔡
Phonemes are the smallest unit of sound that distinguish letters and words from one another. In English, there are 44 unique phonemes. Although we have 26 letters in the alphabet, there are 44 unique sounds that can be created by pairing those 26 letters together thus, phonemes.
🤯
We get these unique combinations in several ways; you can pair 2+ vowels, 2+ consonants, or vowels and consonants to create unique blends.
💥
THAT is what makes learning English so dang tough for all non-native speakers ...and why you might still find spelling so difficult!
🤓

As promised our
📚 Tip No. 1: ROUTINE.
“Our actions become who we are.”
☝🏼 The same applies with reading, stop treating it like an event and intentionally build it into your child’s schedule. Just like brushing their teeth or eating dinner.
✨ Make it fun! Find a cozy spot, grab a bunch of great titles, and set the timer 👈🏼 more on that in a future post!
