Joshua, a 3rd grader at New York School for the Deaf (Fanwood), describes the character of Miles Morales and the plot using ABC order in ASL. Recently, he received the honorable mention from the National Literacy Competition hosted by the Gallaudet Youth Program Congratulations, Joshua!

Declaration on the Rights of Deaf Children in ASL 09/20/2023

At the XXI General Assembly of the World Federation of the Deaf in South Korea, the members officially endorsed the Declaration on the Rights of Deaf Children.

With its 10 articles, this declaration firmly champions the rights of deaf children on a global scale. It plays an indispensable role in advancing and advocating for these rights. Moreover, students from the New York School for the Deaf Fanwood expressed in American Sign Language to explain the entire declaration, spanning from Articles 1 to 10.

ASL Number Stories: 1-5 06/20/2023

Numeral storytelling, similar to ABC storytelling, involves the skillful use of manual numbers in American Sign Language (ASL) to convey a narrative. Students ranging from PreK to 2nd grade in NYSD Fanwood participated in this form of storytelling, crafting their own stories centered around themes they had learned about, such as insects, animals, transportation, etc. As part of their language education, the elementary Fanwood students acquired techniques in utilizing spatial awareness, eye contact, role shifts, and facial expressions to effectively express emotions and use grammatical facial features.
