Craftsman ideas are universal. They are the antithesis of the majority of people in the world. Excellence is an every minute activity and cannot be “short cut” “simplified” or done in a “straight line.” Once a person starts down those Ego based thought processes…it then is a very dismal future of random chance. Putting the time in is difficult in the beginning with the rewards going exponential later in life as we age, with the reverse happening when a person does not follow this process. Not wanting to put the time in is usually because our ego (a pleasure seeking entity) has taken control of our thought process and then forever dooms us to mediocrity…but more important, we wind up hurting the people around us…unknowingly…involuntarily.
The next step you take…the next word out of your mouth…the next action of your hands…. Should be with love and purpose. This is your future.

Phyllis Lewis Butler, 83, of Wheelwright, MA, passed away peacefully at home early Thursday morning, November 2, 2017 with her husband of 42 years, Fay Butler, by her side. Phyllis Ann Cutler was born on Bastille Day, July 14, 1934 to Ruth Mae (Low) Cutler and Elias Henshaw Cutler, on the family farm in Warren, MA. Married to Robin Lewis for 18 years, she is survived by 4 of their 6 children: Kirsten Noble (Hardwick, MA) David Lewis (Fort Collins, CO), Wendy Waterman (N. Eastham, MA), Sharon Hanson (Hardwick, MA); 6 grandchildren: Jonas Noble, Addie Noble, Elizabeth Cronk, Molly Hanson, Samantha Chiasson, and Beau Waterman, and a great-grandson, Nolan Cronk. She was predeceased by two sons, Peter Lewis and Josh Lewis. Phyllis loved her extended family and all things quality, especially food, music and art. Phyllis spent the last half of her life with her husband, traveling around the country in antique cars, working side-by-side in his metal shaping business and hosting students from all over the world. Phyllis was very active in the Hardwick community and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Hardwick Fair, particularly the photography and arts committees. She loved to knit, providing baby sweaters for all new parents she came across. She was a very early adapter of the “farm to table” movement and shared her passion for fresh quality food with everyone, often from her backyard garden. There will be a “pot luck” celebration of her life on Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 1-5 pm at the Hardwick Town House on the Hardwick (MA) Common. Everyone is welcome. @ Wheelwright, Massachusetts

4 sets of ERCO Flanger wire tooling I'm making. These are the brake head pieces. It is a 25 year old design I came up with that allows installing a classic car fender bead first before then installing the wire edge.

My home town has the oldest fair in the US started a dozen years before the revolutionary war. It is completely volunteer, and agricultural based. I have worked on it since I was a kid, coming out of high school I worked with my best friends father to temporary put lights and power in place for the booths during the two days. The last 15 years I have been president. I thought metal shapers might like to know what I do in my spare time. You can view the web site at www.hardwickfair.com

Thursday, Keefe Technical HS Metal Fabrication sophomores spent the day in my shop as a class field trip. We talked about material science, compound curves, and design language. I had the students follow me as we drew together the proportions of automobile stylings. I showed them the safety and operation of the air hammer, Pullmax, and Wheel. Then allowed them to explore compound curves by shaping a tear-dropped part that they could take home.

Brian Hollenbeck and Jeff Ryder, past seminar participants, and I put on the keynote speech at this years full-day event, American Society of Materials (ASM) camp hosted at Worcester Poly-tech Institute (WPI). High school students spent the day exploring material properties and their uses in a fun, educational setting. This was Brian's fifth year. Jeff and his family are spending three months working in my shop all participated in the event.

Kris Garcia's high school welding and fabricating class arrived with 14 students for a field trip. We discussed science, compound curves and design/ style. We drew the proportions of automobiles. The students then shaped a teardrop piece by shrinking and stretching. The group was excited and engaged, the equipment was loud, and everyone made a teardrop shape.

Lauren Pegram and Courtney Evans, past seminar participants spent the week with me as part of my apprenticeship program. www.tactileworkshop.com Lauren is an expert TIG welder and Courtney has an architectural/manufacturing background. They are in business together in Raleigh, NC. We covered material science, compound curves, design and machine work. One evening we all went to Old Colony Vocational HS to an advisory board meeting a school I recently helped with a large grant for new welding equipment. Later in the week we went over the history of American furniture from 1640-1840 then their last day we went into Boston to the Musuem of Fine Arts to look at the furniture on display there to illustrate this history. They are smart women, focused with excellent skills.

Jeff Macari, past seminar participant and lead teacher in a design program at Smithfield HS, Smithfield RI, brought two field trip classes to my shop. One was March 14th and the second was March 27. There was a dozen students in each class. Jeff has a spectacular program teaching a design program that revolves around making stuff at the high school. His assistant Mike, make a great team. I talked to the students about science, compound curves and style, highlighting the proportions of automobiles. Then I turn the students loose on the wheel, air planishing hammers and shrinking on the Pullmax and hand shrinkers where they make a tear drop shape. It is patterned after a lamp I made a few years ago. The students are great which reflects Jeff and Mike's great program.

Phyllis and I headed out to Detroit to present our "Best Metal" award again in the extreme division. I chose a 1951 Chevy. Kent Writtenberry, Gasburg, VA from Kents Kustom Cycles as this years winner. He did all his own metal work, which was extraordinary. Look him up on Facebook to see more of his work.
