Most facilities require residents to separate alkaline batteries from rechargeable batteries and will require proper terminal protection. This is done by covering battery terminals with clear packing tape or by placing batteries in very small individual clear plastic bags. If you are ever uncertain of a battery’s chemistry, it’s best to be cautious and protect the terminals using clear packing tape only.

Needles don’t belong in your recycling cart!

SWANCC sponsors a sharps collection program for residents in member communities who administer home injections. Approved sharps containers are provided for safe storage and disposal. Contact your community’s recycling coordinator for details.

Not a SWANCC member community resident? The U.S. EPA recommends placing it in a thick, puncture-proof container with a tight-fitting lid, and labeling it with permanent marker “SHARPS — DO NOT RECYCLE.” Keep it away from children and pets and follow proper disposal guidelines.

Just a reminder to keep fluorescent bulbs out of your recycling cart!

Fluorescent light tubes contain mercury and should not be thrown into you trash or curbside recycling bin. Instead, contact your community to see if they offer a collection for fluorescent bulbs. They are also accepted at a Household Hazardous Waste facility.

Did you know that you can bring all of these acceptable electronics to our Glenview Transfer Station on Saturdays from 9am-11:30am if you are a SWANCC resident? And best of all it’s FREE of charge!

Once you are at the site, you can pop your trunk open and staff will unload the electronics for you, it’s that simple!
