This weekend our own, Mr OLeary attended the Society for Science’s Research Teachers Conference in Washington, DC.

There he learned all about engaging students in their own original research projects, entering student work into science fair competitions, and made connections with teachers across the country.

Each year only 100 middle school teachers are selected to attend this program. Mr. OLeary is only the 5th teacher from WV to attend this conference, and the first from Ohio County.

Congratulations Mr OLeary and thank for all you do to bring opportunities to our students!

Friday, 6th graders in Mr OLeary’s and Mx Gilbert Robinson’s science classes revealed their penpal matches. Penpals included a sweetener researcher at Coca-Cola, a veterinarian in Canada, a scientist in the Netherlands, and more from dozens of states. We are so excited to see what our students will learn from them!

They will be writing 4 letters back and forth this year as part of the national Letters to a Pre-Scientist program. Wheeling Middle is one of only two schools in West Virginia selected for this school year.
