As soon as you arrive at a hotel, you have to check-in at the reception or front desk. Get ready to spend some time there, as the receptionist has to find your reservation, request payment for the room, and then provide you with all the information on the hotel and its amenities and policies. You are also given a key (very often, a keycard) to your room.

If you a staying at a fancy hotel, you will see a concierge or porter who will help you with your baggage and other things. They can help you get a taxi, make reservations at restaurants, and give you advice about city tours, sightseeing, and the like. If it's a cheaper hotel, the receptionist will do the job for you. Don't forget that it is common courtesy to tip them for their help.

In your room, you may find a single or double bed, depending on how many people are staying. There may sometimes be two single beds, or twin beds. In most hotels today you can find a mini-bar, which is a small fridge that has tiny bottles of alcohol, soda, and various snacks. But don't forget: these are not free. In fact, they usually cost two to three times more than they do in a grocery store.

Another thing that hotels offer is room service. To order room service, you need to call down to the reception and ask for a dish found on the hotel's menu. The food is then brought to your room. You regularly tip for this service as well.

At the check-out time, you have to vacate the room, so that the cleaning staff could clean the rooms, make the beds, and set the rooms ready for the guests. If you don't leave on time, charges may apply.

To get to your destination, you can take an airport shuttle, which will take you directly to the airport. If a hotel doesn't have its own shuttle, they can arrange for one to pick you up at the hotel. You can also call a taxi or use public transportation if you feel like it.
These are phrases you might need to say:

I'd like a single room for 2 nights.
I'd like to stay in a double room.
Do all the rooms have air-conditioning?
Do you have a room with a bath?
Is breakfast included?
What time is breakfast served?
Where do you serve breakfast?
Could you give me a call at 6:00 tomorrow morning, please?
I'd like to pay cash/by credit card.
Can I see the room, please?
What time is check out?
I'd like to check out, please.
Here're the expressions you may hear:
Hello, can I help you?
Do you want a single room or a double room?
Do you have a reservation?
Would you like a room with a bath or a shower?
How many nights would you like to stay at our hotel?
How would you like to pay?
Your room number is 401.
Your room is on the second floor on the left.
Do you want breakfast?
Do you need help with your baggage?
Sorry, we're full. / We don't have any rooms available.
Is there anything else I can do for you?

Learn English with Solexian! BITE OFF MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW

Sometimes we all try to do something that is too big or too complicated for us to do, i.e. we try to BITE OFF MORE THAN WE CAN CHEW. It has nothing to do with food, it can relate to anything we want to do.

For example, you decide to organize a party for 50 people all by yourself and your friend says, "Don't bite off more than you can chew, ask someone for help!"

If you take too many classes at college and you can't prepare well for the tests, you also have BITTEN OFF MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW. You can also say that you overextend yourself or you take on too much.

At the end of the month some people want to complete all the tasks and run all the errands they haven't been able to finish before, but remember not to BITE OFF MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW.
