Dear Knights,
Today I learned that we lost Kathleen "Casey" Warner Long '78, a classmate, teammate, sister, friend, and colleague from our Great Wheaton High School Class of 1978. Our thoughts, prayers, and well wishes go out to Casey Warner and her family.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord,
and let Your perpetual light shine upon her.
May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed
rest in peace.
Knights are forever without you Casey.

KNIGHTS ARE FOREVER WITHOUT YOU. RIP DAVID GRACYALNY.

Early on New Year’s eve, my dear friend of 50 years, David Gracyalny, one of the finest people anyone could ever know, died after an intense illness. An amazing artist in his own right, David was revered in the art community for the innovative academic programs he implemented aimed at securing a future for artists. Thriving in the place he earned among the top leadership at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art), though modest about it, David was proud to see the prestigious institution he loved benefit from his efforts. As a friend for so many years, it would take something akin to a chat on a trip to mars and back to begin to explain all he was to me. It is easy, however, to identify what he did for which I am most grateful. When I was incapacitated during a prolonged illness, David was there for me and my family, rescuing my wife and daughters from their despair, and, for me, relieving the anxiety of my inability to help them. As to what drove David, that too is easy to identify. David’s love for his children, Corinne, Chelsea, and Isaac, and his having found the love of his life, Negar, and his love for her son, Kaivan, an extra bonus, was a sight to behold. Anyone fortunate to catch even the slightest glimpse of David’s joy towards them could see the wisdom of emulating his example in their own lives if only they could. My wish for this very young new year is not to say goodbye to my old friend. Rather it is to bring his example along to whatever life has in store. I can’t presume to know what David would do, but I have no doubt about the decency he would intend. Whether you knew David or not, I invite you to do the same. Where one might wonder what a person like David would do, especially when confronting the most confounding conundrum, think of my friend and there is hope. My best to you & yours. David Futrowski.
