10 lessons. 10 follow-up investigations. One classroom filled with curiosity.
Our Elementary students take on lessons and then carry their learning further through follow up work.
1. Square Roots
Student solving for square roots with the peg board.
2. Samurai History: Research & Construction
As the student said, “Popsicle sticks, cardboard, and hot glue are my thing, so I can do a lot of research.”
3. Fish Research
One student chose to read every fish book they could find, determined not to “miss any facts.”
4. & 5. Capybaras: Scientific Observation
Research leads to detailed drawings, with a student explaining she studied photographs carefully to capture the details.
6. Ganga River Research
A geography lesson expands into a research project and poster exploring the Ganga River.
7. Pascal’s Triangle
Students explore the relationship between Sierpiński triangles and the patterns within Pascal’s Triangle.
8. Tetrahedra
Students take the Sierpinski concept in another direction, constructing three-dimensional Sierpiński pyramids from tetrahedra.
9. Book Group
Discussing the Iliad. One student likens the never ending email box to the Hydra. Agree? Tell us in the comments.
10. Cubing
Student works with cubing materials while showing their work and solution on paper, connecting abstract mathematical concepts to the concrete work that begins much earlier with our preschool counting chains.
This is the power of a lesson that opens a door.
The teacher presents the concept. The child follows the interest, practices the skill, asks new questions, researches, creates, and takes the learning further.
The lesson is just the beginning.
