William Osborne!
Did you know? Wheaton alumnus William Osborne 1876 was Wheaton’s second black graduate. Born in slavery in 1855, he joined a group of Union soldiers during the Civil War and was introduced to Colonel Jonathan Merriam. In the summer of 1865, Merriam brought Osborne to his home in Illinois where he and his wife, Lucy, provided for him until he enrolled in the college preparatory course at Wheaton in 1869. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1876, and later become ordained as a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
In 1987, Wheaton students formed The William Osborne Society, which exists to provide black students an avenue to make their unique contribution to Wheaton College. Their goal is to provide the space for all students to fellowship, serve, play, and worship together in the context of black cultures in order to make Wheaton College more reflective of the wider world for Christ and His Kingdom.
