While the brightly colored male Red-Winged Blackbird often gets all the attention, the female is a remarkable bird in her own right! Her streaky brown feathers provide excellent camouflage as she builds a carefully woven nest among cattails and other wetland plants. These hidden nests help protect eggs and young chicks from predators while keeping them close to important food sources. Next time you hear the familiar calls of Red-Winged Blackbirds at Lincoln Marsh, see if you can spot a female hard at work raising the next generation.

Today’s Marsh Moment: A female snapping turtle walking the trails at Lincoln Marsh. This is a common sight in late spring and early summer as female snapping turtles leave the water in search of a suitable place to lay their eggs. If you encounter one, be sure to give her plenty of space and let her continue on her important journey. 🐢
