As the mom of two teenagers - I know how hard it can be sometimes to get them to open up. Teens are a vault! So, instead of asking, "How was your day?" and getting a one-word answer and a blank stare, ask your kids these questions and see how they open up. These questions have a better chance of working because it's easier for us (teens and adults) to remember a feeling or a moment than trying to summarize your whole day.

If you don't have a good answer, then wait before talking again.

It's time to ask ourselves the hard questions...

Do you say you have an "open door policy" but you're always on your phone?

Do you say you want employees to feel comfortable coming to you with questions, but your calendar is so booked, you're irrirtated by their interruptions?

Do you want to empower your employees to get work done, but you find the tasks keep piling up on your own desk?

You may think it's just your management style or it's just the luck of the draw with the type of employees you have - when your success as a manager is heavily influenced by your time management skills. And your time management (or lack thereof) dictates how much space you have to listen well to your employees and make sure they feel heard, affects your ability to clearly communicate goals, and to pivot when challenges arise.

When we think about improving our communication skills, we don't usually think about time management.

But how you use your calendar,
what you say yes or no to,
what you make time for,
sends a message to those around you.

Not only that, but how booked your calendar is, combined with your working style, communication style, workload, all dictates how much space you have to communicate well.

We all need more margin, and less chaos, in our calendars.
