Dave Pratt, CEO Emeritus of Ranch Management Consultants, writes "I’ve found that there are three things we need to measure to determine the success of a ranch business, or any business for that matter. They are: Profit, Effort, and Fun. Let’s take a quick look at each of these."

The Ranching for Profit principles don't just work in one place, they work everywhere. In this rare archival footage, RMC founder Stan Parsons teaches those principles to a room full of ranchers and farmers in Australia, proving that the root challenges of ranch management cross every border and climate.

Stan's message is simple and still just as relevant today: stop treating symptoms and start addressing causes.

"[Ranching for Profit alumnus] Barry Lehmann shakes his head as he wonders why he calved in February for so many years. When he and his family shifted calving to May and June, they discovered a better way to work with nature. 'We’re calving in sync with nature. You couldn’t pay me enough to go back to calving in February,' he said, as he stood between the house and barn at the four-generation homestead."

The Lehmanns quit February calving 25 years ago — less labour, fewer bales and healthier grass followed on their Rosthern, Sask., ranch.

Our friends over at RCS - Resource Consulting Services write "... the best planning is a team sport. This is where you get the team discussing what is coming up, what are the priorities and working together to develop a plan that will most likely set you up for a win. Working together will generate more ideas, energy and help you identify blind spots or gaps in a plan. This process is also vital for team function and culture. Not investing time in this process will lead to people not being on the same page, people not feeling included or part of the team, and the main risk is the right jobs not being done the right way at the right time. This directly reduces profitability."

Effective planning is crucial for success. Discover tips to optimize your operations this season while considering market trends.

"The decisions that are saving operations this August weren't made this August."

Last Sunday this community proved that in the comments that they left ...
Deeper ponds. Stockpiled feed. Poly wire. Pivots. Weeds left standing that became the only green feed on the place. Decision after decision made quietly, deliberately, when there was still room to think clearly.

Here's what that reminds us: the best drought management doesn't start when the drought does. It starts when the grass is good, the market is up, and nobody is panicking.

Most operations plan for the best year. The ones that build something lasting plan for the worst. So here's today's question not about this summer, but about next summer: 💡
What's one thing you could do right now, while you are able to look ahead, that your future self will be grateful for?

Dave Pratt, CEO Emeritus of RMC, writes "We use key performance indicators to assess the health of a business. Some evaluate economic and financial health. Others measure labor productivity. Still others measure the health of the ecosystem. Last week I added a new key performance indicator for measuring business success to my list."

We use key performance indicators to assess the health of a business. I have a new one for measuring business success, thanks to this rancher
