Hello everyone!
It is now November, the month in which we celebrate Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a uniquely North American holiday (Canada celebrates it in October; the USA celebrates it in November).
History:
The historical reason for this fall holiday is that it honors a day when the European settlers and the local Native Americans came together to share food, despite their arguments and sometimes tense relationships. The food was a mixture of dishes from the local area (turkey, corn, pumpkins and squash) and ones brought over by the Europeans (bread, possibly sweets). Everyone ate and celebrated together, despite their differences, for this one day.
Today:
Now, we celebrate by having a large meal with our families and friends. Typical foods involve turkey, dinner rolls with butter, potatoes, gravy, carrots, green beans, cranberry sauce, and a variety of pies. There is a popular tradition we perform as well. We give thanks or express gratitude for the things we have. For example, we might say "I am thankful for this food," "I am grateful to have such wonderful friends," or "I am thankful that I got a new job." The idea or goal is to appreciate what we have.
Thanksgiving is still a couple weeks away, but here's an activity for you:
What are you thankful or grateful for this year? Please write it in the comments! :)
