Today was truly an honor!
I had the opportunity to present Spark the No No Flame to the students at Wharton Elementary School. After many years of trying, I was finally able to work alongside the Wharton Fire Department the very same first responders who came to my grandfather’s house in 2015. That made today even more meaningful and unforgettable.

A special thank you goes out to the WES PTO and the entire WES team for organizing such a wonderful event for the whole school. The students were fully engaged answering questions, participating in demonstrations, and even acting out “Stop, Drop, and Roll.” It was such a joy to help teach our young learners about fire safety, household fire hazards, and the importance of having a family escape plan.

I also want to give a huge shoutout to my husband, who was such a big help today, and to the new PTO President, Amanda, and Vice President, Shandra. Without their support and teamwork, today wouldn’t have gone as smoothly as it did. Thank you all so much!

And a big Thank You to the PTO for purchasing Spark the No No Flame books, which were given away as raffle prizes for the kids.

Overall, today was one for the books literally and figuratively!

Smoke detectors play a critical role in home safety, and knowing when to replace them is essential.

Here are the guidelines:

General Rule: All smoke detectors should be replaced 10 years after their manufacture date. This applies to both battery-operated and hard-wired detectors, regardless of the brand.

Combination Detectors: If you have combination smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, replace them every 5 to 10 years, depending on when the CO detector expires.

Signs It’s Time to Replace:
Age: Check the manufacture date on the back of the unit. If it’s over 10 years old, it’s time for a replacement.

Dirty Detectors: Over time, smoke detectors collect dust and dirt. Regular cleaning helps, but eventually, they may need replacement.

Frequent False Alarms: If your detector frequently gives false alarms, it might be time for a new one.

Malfunctions: If your smoke detector emits warning chirps or malfunctions, replace it promptly1.

🚨Having an ESCAPE PLAN for your home is crucial for the safety of your family. Here are some steps to create an effective escape plan!

1. Map Your Home: Familiarize yourself with the layout of your home. Identify all possible exits, including doors, windows, and emergency exits.

2. Designate a Meeting Point: Choose a ⚠️designated waiting areaoutside your home where everyone in your family can gather after evacuating. This could be a neighbor's house, a specific tree, or a nearby landmark.

3. Escape Routes:🚪🪟
- Primary Exit: Identify the quickest and safest way to exit each room. Make sure everyone knows how to unlock doors and windows.
- Secondary Exit: Have an alternative route in case the primary exit is blocked. For example, if the main door is inaccessible, use a window or another exit.
- Stairs: If you have multiple floors, plan how to safely descend the stairs. Consider escape ladders for upper floors.

4. Practice Regularly:
- Conduct fire drills at least once a month. Practice using different escape routes and meeting at the designated area.
- Teach children how to crawl low under smoke and feel doors for heat before opening them.

5. 🚨Emergency Contacts:
- Keep a list of emergency numbers near your phone or saved in your mobile device.
- Ensure everyone knows how to call for help (911 or local emergency services).
