Fine motor skills are the small-muscle skills that allow children to hold a pencil, use scissors, button a shirt, and open their own lunch box. They matter more than most parents realize — and they take TIME to develop.
What to encourage at ages 3–5:

🖍️ Drawing, coloring, and painting regularly

🖍️ Practicing with child-safe scissors

🖍️ Playing with playdough, beads, and building blocks

🖍️ Practicing self-dressing — zippers, buttons, velcro

🖍️ Eating with utensils independently

Math in PreK isn't worksheets — it's everywhere. And the skills children build now make kindergarten math feel natural instead of stressful.
What to look for at ages 3–5:

🔵 Counting objects up to 10 (not just reciting — actually counting things)

🔵 Recognizing basic shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle

🔵 Understanding more/less, bigger/smaller, first/last

🔵 Noticing and continuing simple patterns (red, blue, red, blue…)

🔵 Sorting objects by color, size, or shape

Here's something every parent should know: children don't need to read before kindergarten. But they DO need a rich relationship with language.
What that looks like at ages 3–5:

✏️ Speaking in complete sentences and being understood by others

✏️ Listening to a short story and answering questions about it

✏️ Knowing their own name in print

✏️ Recognizing some letters — especially in their name

✏️ Loving books, even if they can't read yet
The #1 thing you can do at home? Talk WITH your child — not just to them. Ask open-ended questions. Let them finish their thoughts. Read together every single day, even for just 10 minutes.
