Please help us welcome our new Middle School Guide, Lindsay Merrow!

We are so excited to welcome Lindsay to the Acton Academy Pittsburgh team!

Lindsay brings years of teaching experience, but what drew her to Acton was something much deeper. She believes young people are capable of far more than they are often given the opportunity to show.

As a wife and mother of three, she has spent years exploring learning environments that help children build confidence, curiosity, character, and ownership of their education. Those are the same values she will be bringing to our Middle School Studio.

Outside of school, Lindsay loves spending time with her family, gardening, playing violin, enjoying the outdoors, and cheering on her children through all of life’s adventures.

What excites us most is not only Lindsay’s experience, but the heart she brings to our community and the genuine belief she has in every young person’s potential.

We cannot wait for our learners and families to get to know her.

Most parent wants their child to enjoy learning. Sometimes all it takes is the right environment. Here’s one parent’s story.

So many young people grow up believing they’re lazy or incapable.

But what if the problem isn’t their ability?

What if they’ve just never had the chance to discover something they’re genuinely interested in?

Watch a young person who finds something they care about, and it’s incredible what happens. They’ll spend hours learning, building, researching, practicing, and asking questions without anyone forcing them to.

Real learning isn’t about making every young person interested in the same thing.

It’s about giving them enough opportunities to explore so they can discover what naturally pulls them in.

Most schools focus on what to learn.

At Acton, we focus on who you become.

Learning to be means learning how to make choices when no one is telling you what to do. It means taking ownership, facing challenges, leading when it’s uncomfortable, and reflecting when things don’t go your way.

It’s not always easy. It’s not supposed to be.

But this is where confidence is built.
This is where character is formed.
This is where young people begin to understand who they are and who they want to become.

Because information is everywhere.
But learning how to be someone worth trusting, leading, and becoming… that changes everything.

The goal isn’t to eliminate risk from childhood.It’s to prepare kids to handle it.

A child who never climbs, builds, explores, fails, argues, gets lost, or figures things out on their own doesn’t become safer long term. They become dependent.

Kids need opportunities to do dangerous things safely.

To climb higher than makes us comfortable.To use real tools.To solve real problems.To navigate conflict without adults rescuing them every second.

Confidence is not taught through lectures.It’s earned through experience.

The world will eventually ask our children to take risks, make decisions, and handle pressure without us beside them. The question is whether they’ll have practiced before that day comes.

Safe enough to learn.Dangerous enough to grow.
