Buenos días, mi gente!
Today, our Hispanic Heritage Month journey takes us to Paraguay!
Paraguay is a country in South America, located right in the middle of the continent. It doesn't have an ocean coastline, but it has two major rivers—the Paraguay River and the Paraná River—that are very important to the country.
About 30,000 people in the United States identify as having Paraguayan origin or ancestry.
Paraguay has two official languages: Spanish and Guaraní. Spanish came to the region during Spanish colonization, but Guaraní is an Indigenous language that was spoken in the area long before the Spanish arrived.
Today, Guaraní is still spoken by millions of people in Paraguay. Many Paraguayans speak both Spanish and Guaraní, making Paraguay one of the few countries in the Americas where an Indigenous language is spoken so widely alongside Spanish.
One of Paraguay's most famous foods is sopa paraguaya. Don't let the name fool you—it isn't actually soup! It is a delicious, fluffy cornbread made with cornmeal, cheese, eggs, and onions.
One of the country's most famous wild animals is the jaguar, one of the largest cats in the Americas!
And one final fun fact: Paraguay's official currency is the guaraní—named after the Guaraní people!

Buenos días, mi gente!
Today, our Hispanic Heritage Month journey takes us to Uruguay!
Uruguay is a small country in South America, located between Argentina and Brazil, with beautiful beaches along the Atlantic Ocean.
70,000 people in the United States identify as having Uruguayan origin or ancestry? Most people in Uruguay speak Spanish, and you may notice that their Spanish sounds a little different! Uruguayans have their own way of speaking, including a special accent and words that are unique to the region.
Uruguay also has a fascinating history. Before European colonization, Indigenous peoples, including the Charrúa, lived in the region. Spain later colonized the area, and Uruguay became an independent country in 1828.
Uruguay is also famous for carnival! The country has one of the longest carnival celebrations in the world, with music, dancing, colorful costumes, and special performances called candombe, a musical tradition with deep African roots.
And we can't forget about soccer! Uruguay has a BIG soccer history. It hosted and won the first FIFA World Cup in 1930! Uruguay's national team is known as La Celeste, which means “The Sky Blue,” because of the color of their jerseys.

Buenos días, mi gente!
Today, our Hispanic Heritage Month journey takes us somewhere very special—Equatorial Guinea!
But wait…there's something surprising about Equatorial Guinea. It is a country in Africa where Spanish is an official language!
So, you might be wondering… Why do people in an African country speak Spanish?
The answer takes us back in history. Long before Europeans arrived, this African country had their own languages, cultures, and traditions. However, In the 1700’s, Spain took control of the region, and Spanish became an important language in government and education. Equatorial Guinea became an independent country in 1968, but Spanish remained one of its official languages.
It is estimated that about 68% of the population speaks Spanish. Today, Spanish continues to be an important official language, alongside French and Portuguese.
You can even taste the Spanish influence! Equatorial Guinean food is a delicious mix of African and Spanish traditions. Traditional foods include paella and tortilla de patatas, or Spanish potato omelet.
When you see paella or a Spanish tortilla on a table in Equatorial Guinea, you're seeing one example of how cultures can influence one another over time!

Pre-K is continuing their 5 Senses study! Currently we are learning about olfaction or our sense of smell! We matched and found animal noses, did some smell tests, listened to What If You Had An Animal Nose? made animal nose masks, and learned fun facts about animals that don’t smell with their noses!

Today, our Hispanic Heritage Month journey takes us to Nicaragua! 🇳🇮
Nicaragua is a beautiful country in Central America, located between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It is known as the “Land of Lakes and Volcanoes” because it has amazing lakes, mountains, and volcanoes!
About 607,000 people in the United States identify as having Nicaraguan origin or ancestry.
Most people in Nicaragua speak Spanish, but Nicaragua is also home to Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean communities whose languages and traditions are an important part of the country's culture. Some of these languages include Miskito, Mayangna, and Rama.
Nicaragua also has a rich history. Indigenous peoples lived there long before European explorers arrived.
Nicaragua is also home to monkeys, sloths, jaguars, sea turtles, colorful birds, and more than 700 species of birds!
One especially beautiful bird is the guardabarranco, Nicaragua's national bird. It has bright colors and two long blue feathers that look like little rackets at the end of its tail!
And we can't forget the food! Popular Nicaraguan foods include gallo pinto, a delicious combination of rice and beans, nacatamales, quesillo, and vigorón.

Today, our Hispanic Heritage Month journey takes us to Ecuador!
Did you know that Ecuador gets its name from the Equator, the imaginary line that circles the middle of our Earth? The Equator actually passes right through Ecuador!
Ecuador is a beautiful country in South America, filled with mountains, rainforests, beaches, and the amazing Galápagos Islands.
Did you know that about 911,000 people in the United States identify as having Ecuadorian origin or ancestry? That means Ecuadorian culture is part of communities all across our country.
Most people in Ecuador speak Spanish, but Ecuador is also home to many Indigenous languages, including Kichwa and Shuar. Ecuador is home to many Indigenous peoples and nationalities, each with their own unique cultures, traditions, and histories.
Now, let's travel to the Galápagos Islands, where you'll find some incredible animals!
The Galápagos giant tortoise can live for more than 100 years! And here's a really cool one—the marine iguana! It is the only iguana in the world that swims in the ocean. It even dives underwater to eat algae!
Many animals in the Galápagos are endemic, which means they are found naturally only in that place. How cool is that?
And we can't forget about the food! Ecuadorian cuisine includes empanadas, ceviche, plantains, rice and beans, and llapingachos, which are delicious potato cakes.
Finally, here's a fun fact you might recognize: Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency!
