Learning to swim doesn’t look the same for everyone, and that’s a good thing.
For some kids, it starts with wading in slowly. For others, it’s diving right in. What matters is having the space to build confidence at your own pace.
Explore swim lessons for every level, and spend the rest of the day enjoying the beach through the Family & Community Program:

Are you looking to get your teenager outside and have a rewarding summer experience? We are still looking for a few water safety instructors (swim instructors). “Play is the work of the child.”
In the newest Hale Magazine, we explore how play isn’t just fun, but also how children learn, grow, and connect to the world around them.
Whether in classrooms or out in the woods, curiosity leads the way. And when kids have the space to explore, they don’t just learn about nature. They begin to care for it.
That’s where conservation begins.

Learning to swim is one of the most important safety skills we can offer children and ourselves. Swimming lessons don’t replace supervision, but they do reduce the risk of drowning and help build confidence in the water. And it’s never too late to start. A few lessons can last a lifetime.

After making their journals in April, writing in them in nature has been a meaningful experience for many of our students from Boston Day and Evening Academy. One of our students shares their experience with us.

"Right now I’m sitting outside surrounded by trees and quiet, trying to understand my own thoughts for once instead of running from them. The air feels still but alive at the same time. I hear the wind moving through the leaves and birds around me chirping , but somehow everything still feels personal and isolated in a way that forces me to think. This program (Intrepid Academy at Hale) has made me notice things I normally ignore, such as, how much peace exists when you actually slow down long enough to feel it. What surprised me most is how uncomfortable silence can be when you’re used to surviving chaos.

I’ve realized that people carry pain differently. Some hide it in anger, some in silence, and some in pretending they’re okay. I’ve learned that life can change in seconds, and because of that, you can’t keep waiting to become the person you want to be. I know now that I’ve spent a lot of time carrying grief, pressure, disappointment, and fear of failing, but I also learned that surviving those things made me stronger than I give myself credit for. The world can be cruel, but there are still people, moments, and places that remind you why you keep going.

So here’s my advice to myself: stop shrinking yourself just because life has hurt you. Stop letting fear make decisions for you. Trust your intuition more. Protect your peace, but don’t close your heart. Keep creating, keep speaking, keep loving deeply even after loss. You are not meant to stay stuck in one version of yourself forever. Growth is painful, but so is remaining the same.

And no matter how heavy life gets, don’t forget there’s still a future waiting for you."

What does Hale look like through the eyes of a bird?
In the newest Hale Magazine, one small bird watches it all: busy beavers, returning wildlife, and people learning, exploring, and sometimes forgetting how their actions ripple through the land.
It’s a simple reminder: every part of this place is connected and worth caring for.
That’s what conservation means to us. Not just protecting land, but protecting the relationships that make it come alive—for people and wildlife alike.
