What does permanent protection really mean?

It means 1,100 acres of Hale’s land are now safeguarded from development — legally protected in perpetuity under Conservation Restrictions.

It means this land will always serve Hale’s mission to:
• Provide outdoor education
• Inspire youth leadership
• Build an engaged community
• Foster wellness rooted in nature

It means the forests, fields, and waterfronts that shape learning and connection today will remain intact for generations to come.

In August, we welcomed students from Dedham LifeStart to IntrepidHale! Through hands-on outdoor experiences, students built skills that go far beyond the trail: practicing communication, teamwork, problem-solving, confidence, and independence along the way. Together, we swam, climbed, practiced archery, learned hiking navigation, cooked, went fishing, practiced yoga, made s’mores, and took on new challenges as a team. Most importantly, we saw students support one another, build confidence, and discover what they’re capable of. What a great two weeks. We hope you will be back soon!

If you didn't get a season pass this year, you can still join us with a South Beach Day Pass, a pass from one of our local libraries, or our $5 after 5 PM deal. “On Wednesday, fluffy white clouds floated across a bright blue sky as Kevin Burk, of Westwood, jogged along [Hale’s] shaded dirt trails. After recently moving to the area with his family, he was excited to bring his 5- and 2-year-old children to the reservation — particularly given the younger one’s newfound fascination with bugs.

‘Just having something untouched in this day and age is so hard to find,’ Burk said.”

Want to know if a beaver has been busy nearby? Look for the telltale signs! Freshly chewed tree trunks with distinctive cone-shaped cuts and dams built across streams or ponds are some of the clearest clues. Beavers chew trees for food and building materials, using branches, mud, and logs to create dams that help form the deep, calm water they need for protection. Keep your eyes open on the trails, and you might just spot the handiwork of one of nature's most skilled engineers.

More than 1,100 acres of Hale are now permanently protected through a Conservation Restriction.

This is about more than protecting open space, though. It's about ensuring Hale can continue connecting people and place for generations to come.

For more than a century, Hale has been a place where children learn, families connect, and communities grow through nature. By protecting this land forever, we're protecting that mission — for all, forever.

We're deeply grateful to the partners, supporters, donors, and community members who helped make this possible, and we look forward to our continued work with The Trustees as they join us in stewarding Hale’s forests, ponds, and trails.
