I was reminded of a great life lesson today. I'm a safety professional and I'm well rehearsed on the 6 stages of the hierarchy of controls. But it turns out there are 5. 'Isolate' is a subset of 'engineering controls'. That is less important than I was able to relearn something I knew. My firm knowledge was challenged, I researched it, looked at several different respected resources and changed my understanding.

Always be curious, willing to learn and relearn.

Stay safe my friends

National Safey Month Week 3: Workplace Injuries & Illnesses Fact Sheet

06/21/2022

Week 3 of June represents Injury Prevention. In 2020 alone, more than four million workplace injuries required medical attention in the U.S. Learn about approaches to preventing injuries and deaths, including identifying hazards and assessing risks.

According to OSHA data, these are the four top causes of harm on construction work sites:

- Falls

- Struck-by incidents

- Caught-in or -between incidents

- Electrocutions

These four types of incidents are all preventable with the right combination of safety practices and safety equipment.

Beyond potentially fatal injuries, work-related musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs) — like repetitive strain injuries — are also a serious threat. These injuries often result from a non-ergonomic workspace that requires a worker to perform repetitive motions — stooping, bending or lifting — in a way that strains the joints and muscles.

Week two of National Safety Month focuses on Workplace Impairment.

NSC defines impairment as the inability to function normally or safely as a result of a number of factors – from chemical substances (e.g., alcohol, opioids, cannabis), physical factors (e.g., fatigue and certain medical conditions), social factors (e.g., professional and other stressors) and mental distress (e.g., related illness and other factors).

NIOSH: The opioid crisis is taking a devastating toll on parts of the U.S. workforce. High rates of opioid overdose deaths have occurred in industries with high injury rates and physically demanding working conditions such as construction, mining, and fishing. Workplaces have the opportunity to play a critical role in improving the safety and well-being of workers.

Substance use/misuse is not the only work-related issue that may result in impairment in the workplace. Fatigue can affect any worker in any occupation or industry, with serious consequences for worker safety and health. Fatigue can slow down reaction times, reduce attention or concentration, limit short-term memory, and impair judgement. Work-related fatigue is often related to nonstandard schedules, such as night shift work and extended work hours, which can disrupt or shorten sleep. However, there are other factors such as physically demanding work, or hot environments which can affect fatigue.
