I recently joined the Making Change with Your Money podcast to discuss what it means to redefine success in midlife, not just personally, but also professionally.

After more than thirty years as a school psychologist and school administrator, I launched Taylor Educational Advocacy, a practice dedicated to helping neurodiverse children and their families create Pathways to thrive in school and beyond.

In this conversation, I shared how my values evolved:
Why autonomy, creativity, and balance matter as much as achievement
The lessons about integrity and work I learned from my parents
How I’ve translated decades of school-based experience into coaching and advocacy that empower families to navigate complex educational systems with confidence

Midlife reinvention is often seen as starting over, but I view it as building forward, utilizing the wisdom and perspective we’ve earned to create work that truly aligns with who we’ve become.

Saw this great infographic by . So often schools rule out autism because kids can make eye contact. The educational classification worksheet for autism in CT is dated. Based on our current understanding of autism, it is excluding students from special education.

I am taking time today to reflect on the words and actions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today we celebrate his life and his legacy. We still have a long, winding road ahead of us before the United States truly reflects the basic idea that all people are created equal. However, without brave fighters like King, we would have an even longer path to walk.

Hey, it's Nancy!

Let's talk about a common parental worry. Many parents worry about their child being pulled out of regular classes if they are entered into special education. This is a bit of a complex subject I'll circle back to, but the short answer is USUALLY NO.

There is actually a law that says children need to be placed in the 'least restrictive environment' when entering special education programs which means keeping them with their classroom teacher(s) and peers as much as possible.

Hey, it's Nancy!

Special education became required by law in the 1970s. It was created to provide for children who were struggling to learn in school. The system was failing these children and parents advocated to ensure that ALL children were provided with an education. Special education initiatives were a step forward towards creating a more equitable society for disabled Americans.

We had a lovely healthy gluten free feast. Vic’s Brussels sprouts were proclaimed to be magazine worthy. We forgot to get dessert pictures- apple crumble, pumpkin, and key lime. They were all delicious.

So, the conference has passed, you've communicated your concerns to the teacher, and you understand where your child is academically.

Now, I want you to take a few moments to take notes and document where your child is and what is going on. It is hard to keep all of this information in our brains, so by writing it down we will be able to look for patterns and trends so we cxan better help our children in the future.
