Born in December of 1920, Dave Brubeck was an American jazz pianist and composer. Often regarded as a foremost exponent of cool jazz, Brubeck’s work is characterized by unusual time signatures and superimposing contrasting rhythms, meters, tonalities, and combining different styles and genres, like classical, jazz, and blues.

With a career that spanned over six decades, his experiments in odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint, polyrhythm and polytonality remain hallmarks of innovation. Designated a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, Brubeck was one of the most active and popular musicians in both the jazz and classical worlds.

William Billings (1746-1800) is considered America’s first major composer, known for his innovative and distinctly American choral music during the colonial era.

His compositions are known for their rhythmic vitality, dissonance, and “fuging tunes,” which were a new development in American music. His publications like “The New England Psalm-Singer” (1770) contributed to the social and educational movement of singing schools.
