We all have stories to tell. This seven-week workshop helps writers of all levels bring their stories to cinematic life while exploring the essentials of screenwriting—format, structure, character, dialogue, and visual storytelling. In a supportive, collaborative setting, students will share work, develop short films or features, and learn to think like screenwriters.

Open to all levels of experience, from beginners to writers with works-in-progress.

Writing a short story is no easier than writing a novel, in fact, it can be more challenging as writers must hone their story across only a few pages rather than a few hundred. This workshop is suitable for writers of all levels, and will look at brevity in storytelling and efficiency in emotion and plot, ensuring every word and action counts. Using short story examples from classic and contemporary writers, we’ll consider the essential craft elements of short story writing in a workshop environment where each participant will have the opportunity to share their own work and offer considerate and respectful feedback on others.

During this intensive, will read our work aloud and respond to one another with praise and deep respect for the newborn stories and the vulnerable writer. We do not criticize or put anyone on the spot, nor do we suggest ways to improve any given piece. Not because we are overly nice, but because the very best way to learn to write is to have our own strengths identified, so we may further develop and build upon them. As we also recognize and point out the successes of our fellow workshop participants and verbalize what each one does well, we absorb the writing craft and become able to try these new methods in our own writing. Your instructor will write along with you and occasionally read, too, to illustrate ways to approach different prompts, story ideas, and styles—and to show how everyone falls flat sometimes. No one is on a pedestal here, we are all writers, celebrating one another’s work, and cheering each other along.
