Last night, MoCA\CT celebrated the opening of Michael Borders: Connecticut Industry—an immersive, monumental portrait of the people, places, labor, and ingenuity that have shaped our state.

On view through November 15, the exhibition presents eight large-scale painted panels, each representing one of Connecticut’s eight counties. At first glance, Borders’ use of warm and cool colors, rhythmic forms, and layered compositions creates an energetic visual experience. Look closer, and a richly detailed world unfolds: waterwheels and boilers, local industries and inventions, historical figures and landscapes, labor and civic life.

Developed through more than three years of research and informed by decades of artistic practice, Connecticut Industry moves beyond historical record. It is a vivid work of painterly invention—one that invites us to consider how history is remembered, represented, and reimagined.

“I hope audiences will experience it as an aesthetically compelling artwork and appreciate it on those terms, rather than viewing it solely as a historical document,” says artist Michael Borders.

What does Connecticut look like from 2,000 feet above?

For artist Michael Borders, that aerial perspective became the foundation for Connecticut Industry, a monumental eight-panel mural tracing nearly 300 years of Connecticut’s people, landscape, labor, manufacturing, and ingenuity.

“I imagined the painting as a giant motor—an image that could convey the power of the people, the land, the machines, and everything working together.”

Spanning 40 feet and more than 25 years in the making, Connecticut Industry brings the state’s industrial history into one sweeping, complex vision—from Indigenous craftsmanship and water-powered mills to submarines, helicopters, aerospace, and the industries shaping Connecticut today.
