NIOSH wants to hear from you:

Survey to improve firefighter line-of-duty death and serious injury investigations The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is seeking participants for a brief survey about line-of-duty deaths (LODD) and serious injury investigations.

Every year, 60 to 100 firefighters die in the line of duty. When LODDs occur, fire departments can ask the NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP) to conduct independent investigations. FFFIPP then writes a LODD Investigation Report with recommendations to prevent future incidents.

NIOSH is surveying personnel from fire departments across the country to understand better what human factors are important to firefighter LODD and serious injury investigations. Human factors are how people interact with their environment, tools, and each other. This includes understanding how people think, act, and make decisions. This is important in work or emergency situations. The results of this survey will help find, create, and improve tools that can be used by both the FFFIPP and by fire departments, as needed.

Please consider taking this survey and asking others in your department to do the same. NIOSH is trying to gather information from chief officers, company officers, and firefighters, especially those who have served in a safety officer role. The survey will take between 15 and 20 minutes, and your responses will be kept confidential. Questions will not ask for personal information about you or your fire department. Your participation is voluntary, and all questions are optional. You can end the survey at any time.

RIP Chief

🖤 With Deep Sadness, We Announce the Passing of Chief Emeritus George Hill 🖤

It is with profound sorrow that the members of the Cora Volunteer Fire Department announce the passing of our beloved Chief Emeritus George Hill, who entered into eternal rest today, July 4, 2026, at the age of 76.

February 25, 1950 – July 4, 2026

Chief Hill dedicated countless years of his life to serving the citizens of our community with honor, courage, and unwavering commitment. In 1986, following the unexpected passing of our department’s first Fire Chief, Tom Holloway, George accepted the responsibility of leading the Cora Volunteer Fire Department. During one of the most difficult times in our department’s history, he stepped forward to provide the leadership, stability, and vision that would shape the future of our organization for decades to come.

Throughout his tenure as Fire Chief, he guided our department through many challenges, always leading with integrity, humility, and a servant’s heart. One of Chief Hill’s greatest accomplishments was overseeing the planning and construction of the Cora Volunteer Fire Department’s current station, which opened in 2000. That building stands today not only as our home, but as a lasting testament to his dedication and commitment to ensuring future generations of firefighters would have the resources needed to protect our community.

Even after stepping down as Fire Chief, George’s service to the department never ended. He remained an active member of the Cora Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors, continuing to provide guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support to the department he loved so dearly.

His influence extends far beyond the walls of our station. He mentored countless firefighters, inspired generations of volunteers, and helped build the department we proudly serve in today. The values he instilled—service, sacrifice, teamwork, and compassion—continue to guide us every day.

Although we mourn the loss of Chief Hill, we are deeply grateful for the legacy he leaves behind. His impact on our department and our community will never be forgotten, and it is now our responsibility to carry forward the standard of excellence that he established.

On behalf of the officers, members, and Board of Directors of the Cora Volunteer Fire Department, we extend our deepest condolences to the Hill family and to all who knew and loved him. We ask our community to keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Today, on Independence Day, as our nation celebrates freedom, we also pause to honor a man who spent his life answering the call to serve others. While our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that Chief Hill’s legacy will continue to live on through every firefighter who wears the Cora Volunteer Fire Department patch.

Rest easy, Chief. Your watch is complete. We have it from here.
