John XXIII Seminary community is committed to our founding mission: the human, spiritual, academic and pastoral formation of candidates between 30 and 60 years of age. Our unique institution is the only American seminary for these mature candidates administered by diocesan priests. For more than four decades, candidates have been accepted from various professional backgrounds; such as law, medicin

e, business, teaching, sales, banking, social work and military service. The diversity of life experiences shared by these mature seminarians enriches both the Seminary community and their future ministries in the Church. John XXIII, seminarians are offered a balanced program of priestly formation in a healthy, happy and mature environment specifically suited for the adult learner. The curriculum of theological studies is designed to nurture what is central to our Catholic Faith and Tradition in an integrated human, spiritual and pastoral formation program. The expectation is that candidates applying for admission will have obtained an undergraduate degree and many enter the Seminary having already earned advanced degrees. Candidates considering admission are sponsored by a diocese or religious order. Our current seminarians represent over thirty dioceses and five religious orders located throughout the United States and beyond. Since 1964, 140 dioceses and religious orders have entrusted the formation of their candidates for priesthood to this Seminary. Our 600 alumni serve throughout the world.

This week, 15 new seminarians from 10 dioceses and one religious community arrived at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary for orientation. As each new seminarian arrived on campus, upperclassmen who are now deacons welcomed each new man by blessing his room—a beautiful tradition that reminds each new seminarian that he is entering a community rooted in faith, prayer, and brotherhood.

Orientation is an important first step in their journey of priestly formation. During these days, the new seminarians begin to learn about the Seminary’s community, traditions, and formation program while getting to know one another and the faculty and staff who will accompany them throughout their time here.

For many of these men, this is the beginning of a significant new chapter in their lives as they respond to God’s call to the priesthood. We are grateful to welcome these 15 new men to the Seminary and ask you to keep them in your prayers as they begin this important journey of faith, formation, and discernment.

Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary encourages prospective candidates between 30 and 60 years to discern a possible vocation to Priesthood.

We host “First Friday Visits” where men discerning priesthood are invited to join the Seminary community for prayer, fellowship, and dinner. Join us: Friday, September 4, 2026.

These brief and informal evenings begin at 5:00 PM and conclude by 7:30 PM. During their visit here, the men will join the community for Holy Hour and Evening Prayer, followed by dinner with the seminarians and an opportunity to tour the Seminary. If a candidate wishes to speak with a priest faculty member during his visit, we will arrange for that as well.

There is also the option to attend virtually via the Chapel live-stream link of evening prayer followed by a Zoom meeting. The Zoom meeting link is available once registered.

Summer Formation Spotlight: Seminarian Patrick Bridges '29 (Diocese of Orlando)

This summer, seminarian Patrick Bridges '29 is serving at Magnify's Bishop Grady Villas, a residential community that supports adults with disabilities in St. Cloud, Florida. Through this pastoral assignment, Patrick is accompanying residents as they continue to develop daily living skills, build meaningful relationships, and thrive within a caring community.

Reflecting on the experience, Patrick shared:

"One of the most beautiful things about this assignment is that I've been able to see the Christ within each of the people that are members. Although they come from varying backgrounds with varying different conditions, each of them within their human person and their soul is so beautiful."

During his first year of formation at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary, Patrick's pastoral assignment was in prison ministry. This summer's assignment has given him the opportunity to encounter another aspect of Christ's presence and deepen his appreciation for the dignity of every human person.

"Each person, regardless of their condition or status in life, is uniquely and wonderfully made by God."

Experiences like these are an essential part of formation at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary, helping our seminarians grow into compassionate priests who recognize Christ in every person they are called to serve.

This summer, Never Too Late, the podcast of Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary, is shining a light on the dedicated faculty members who help form the next generation of Catholic priests. Through these conversations, you'll get to know the men whose wisdom, experience, and joyful witness enrich the lives of our seminarians every day.

Our first two episodes feature:

🔹 Deacon John Nicholson, Coordinator of Pastoral Formation, who shares his journey to becoming a permanent deacon and discusses the vital role pastoral formation plays in preparing seminarians for priestly ministry. Learn how hands-on ministry experiences help shape compassionate shepherds for the Church.

This summer, seminarians Russell Grafrath '28 and Paul Otieno '28, who are in formation for the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, are participating in a Spanish language immersion program in Guatemala.

Recently, they joined La Procesión de Corpus Christi in Antigua, Guatemala alongside the pastor of Santuario San Felipe, Padre Valentín. The seven-and-a-half-hour procession brought the Blessed Sacrament through the surrounding mountain communities, taking Christ to the people in a beautiful public witness of faith.

Learning Spanish is an important part of their priestly formation. As future priests, the ability to minister in Spanish will help them proclaim the Gospel, celebrate the sacraments, and accompany the growing Hispanic Catholic community with greater compassion and pastoral care.

Congratulations to Fr. Chris Aubrey ’26 on his Ordination to the Priesthood for the Diocese of Worcester!

On June 7, he was ordained by Bishop Robert McManus at the Cathedral of Saint Paul for the Diocese of Worcester. We give thanks to God for Fr. Chris Aubrey’s faithful response to the Lord’s call and are proud to have accompanied him on his journey toward priesthood at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary.

Please join us in praying for Father Aubrey as he begins his ministry in service to the People of God.
