Is your high school student writing their essay for the Common Application?

Here's one of the choices on the College Board's 2025 application.

What is the one passion or one hobby that you could not live without? Many kids are like, 'what?'

My experience as a poet and writer telling stories is useful in working with high schoolers on what they might need or might not have reflected on. When I meet with a student, I always ask them a few questions: 'Tell me how you would describe yourself? How might your teacher describe you? How would your friends describe you?' I get a sense of who they are as a person."
