Mark your calendar: Tuesday, September 15 is Everybody Gives Day (EGD) at Kinhaven! Every gift goes towards our mission of developing the whole person through immersion in music, nature, and community.

Kinhaven isn't just a summer music program – it's a transformative journey where young musicians discover the power of their own creativity. Through immersive experiences in chamber, orchestral, and choral music, our students find their voice and forge lifelong friendships.

This year, there are even more ways to give - and it’s never too early! You can make an individual or monthly donation, and you can even support EGD by ordering a concert hall pathway brick!

Year Two of the Kinhaven Semester Program, in collaboration with Burr and Burton Academy, is officially underway!

We’re thrilled to welcome a wonderful new cohort of students, supported by our extraordinary faculty and staff, and by families who believe deeply in what this program makes possible.

With an incredible first year behind us, we’re ready for another great fall semester of learning, music-making, community, and growth - continuing to build an innovative program that feels more important than ever!

Junior Session, Week 2: Borodin quartet by the pond; common room chaos; bubbles at sunset; Britten and Sibelius in orchestra; mermaid status attained in the pond. New levels of musicianship attained, and bonds of friendship strengthened. Thank you for the music, and the magic! 💕

John Bannon likes to dub this group the “spare parts ensemble” - but we think that couldn’t be further from the truth! Piano, percussion, and bass are the essential backbone (and bass-line) of every ensemble in which they take part. Led by piano faculty Hannah and Arun, bass faculty Troy, and percussion faculty John, this group helps to fasten all of the rest of the instrument families together. We’re still thinking about Felix’s impeccable Wally Wampus impression.

Let’s hear it for our violins, violas, and cellos! It’s been an amazing summer. We welcomed two new cello faculty into the Kinhaven family, and in no time at all, it felt like Frankie and Laura had always been here! We loved the cello choir ushering in our graduation ceremony, the constant delights of Aundrey and Sydney’s alto force, and the Regatta-winning Violins, with Sarah, Sofiya, Joseph, and Hannah. The strings are many and mighty. We miss you!

Kinhaven has gone through many changes over the last 74 years, but one of its most important tenants remains strong: everybody sings!

From the Dushkin’s founding in 1952, Kinhaven’s promise of growth through collaborative music-making had its heart in the chorus. While there are no vocal majors, singing runs through every facet of life at Kinhaven - nightly bell-singing, Mrs. Dushkin’s own birthday song for meals, and madrigals from the balconies before faculty concerts. The last sounds we hear each summer are from our all-student chorus, as we ask the audience to clap before and leave the concert hall with music still in their ears.

Leading our chorus is director Nick Diaz, who has the unique experience of being the only faculty who works with every single student at Kinhaven. He hears a Happy Birthday voice check on day 1, and knows every soprano, alto, tenor, and bass by name (and volume). He leads the full chorus and a voluntary chamber choir, and if you’ve attending any of our concerts with vocal music, you’d never guess it was many students’ first time singing in a choir. Our students this summer will particularly remember the hearty cheers every time Nick announced chorus rehearsal!

We are grateful for the incredible with Nick does each summer, which brings Kinhaven together in one of its most fundamental ways.

Next up - BRASS! We love our brass here at Kinhaven. Between the daily 9 AM warm-ups for trumpet, horn, and low brass, weekly Friday night chorales on the basketball court, and our administrative through-line of executive director, session director, and many staff, the Kinhaven brass contingent is always strong - and we like it that way!

We miss you all.

The amazing winds of Kinhaven! Flutes, clarinets, bassoons, and oboes carry the high, soaring melodies of the orchestra, as well as the grounded commentary of the contrabassoon and bass clarinet - we wouldn’t be the same without you. With charming matching bassoon shirts, Disney arrangements, and bocals to bocals, an all-clarinet K-pop Demon Hunters rendition at Wally Wampus, FluteHaven, and the infamous reed sacrifice - our winds are certainly one of a kind. Thank you to our faculty and guest artists for your guidance and care, as always. Go, reeds (and flutes), go!
