Going back to school can be a big transition for a young child, even when the classroom is already familiar. 🌱
Summer has its own rhythm, and returning to school means shifting again. Different mornings, different routines, goodbyes, and reunions.
A calm start, a warm and brief goodbye, and a little extra understanding for each other can make that transition easier.
And if there are tears? That doesn’t mean the day is going badly.
We put together a short guide for families navigating those first days back:

Wishing everyone a happy return to school.

Our head of school on starting school in Weston, MA: a calm morning rhythm, a short goodbye at the door, and how children settle in over the first weeks.

What do you actually need to bring to school? 🎒
Usually, the simplest things work best: comfortable clothes, shoes that are easy to manage independently, and things that are okay to get a little dirty, wet, or covered in paint.
We put together a practical guide with what we recommend for school, why these choices matter, and a few examples that work well for young children.

For us, it is not just about having everything packed. It is about helping children feel comfortable, independent, and ready to take part in their day.

A preschool packing list from our Weston, MA Montessori school: clothing, indoor shoes, outdoor gear, lunchbox, nap mat and diapering, plus checklists by age.

A nest by our Nest Classroom window. 🪺
How sweet is this?
The photo isn’t perfect because we watched it quietly with the children from inside, making sure not to disturb the nest.

Children may wonder what teachers do on the weekend…
Well, here’s the truth: we keep playing. 😉
Today’s version of fun was "Rediscover: Practical Life" training with Northeast Montessori Institute, a joyful Sunday of Montessori learning, inspiration, and connection with wonderful trainers and colleagues.
Hooray for dedicated teachers who keep growing! 🌿

Beauty with purpose.
Flower work in our classrooms is more than aesthetics or arranging a bouquet. Children explore the parts of a flower, practice careful cutting and pouring, and care for the environment with calm focus and steady hands. Simple materials, real skills, and a community that works together.

When learning becomes care.
In our classroom, study is always connected to real life, so learning about fish naturally becomes caring for our classroom animal: gentle hands, shared responsibility, and working together as a community.
