We had an amazing trip to the Eau Claire River on Friday. The kids did a great job again sampling macro-invertebrates to determine the overall quality of the water based on its biotic index. We removed invasive species like the rusty crayfish and sea lampreys.

While river dipping, we were joined by retired DCEMS 6th gr science teacher, Tammy Koenig, who helped identify our netted critters. Mrs. Kostyn and Mrs. Blank appreciated her expertise.

As citizen scientists, under Mrs. Hawkā€™s tutelage, they continued to investigate the abiotic factors of this ecosystem. Students collected data about DO, pH, flow rate, depth, temperature, and recent weather conditions.

We had a hoot-n-hollering good time today when we investigated energy flow through a predator/prey relationship as we dissected owl pellets. The young scientists did a great job of separating bones from other waste and identifying them on a chart. Tomorrow, we will wrap up our lab and bear down for our upcoming Ecology test and spring river trip.
