To the many Students of Sacred Church Protocol:
More Grace! These three men helped to shape much of what we see in the African American Pentecostal Church as it pertains to High Church. Who are these three men? Well, if you don’t know then you certainly aren’t a student! These three men pictured are the Late ArchBishop J. Delano Ellis, the Bishop Carl Montgomery, and the Bishop James R Chambers. These three men, along with other very notable men, helped to form our minds towards a more defined sacredness in our worship, liturgy, dress, daily behavior, and life’s custom.
While the admiration for these giants is very commendable, it is also offensive to forget the true sons who were been birthed, mentored, and respected by these three gentlemen for years beyond the birth of many on the scene. It is important that in our zeal to maintain the dignity of the Church that we not only honor the Fathers who have paved the way, but also recognize that #1 all of the fathers are not asleep, and #2 that there is a legitimate generation after them that are the sons and daughters.
To the young men and women that have a desire to serve in the Episcopacy and the Prelature because of your hope to be as they were and are, your time and your turn will inevitably come in time. However, there is a prepared generation that must serve their time and turn before you. Don’t disrespect by disregarding your father’s generation in your attempt to replace your grandfather. Take your time, and continue learning from the true sons who are now coming on the scene to serve where and how our fathers served. The nephews and nieces are next, but after us!
I trust that you will receive this note in the spirit of love, the same spirit in which it was written. I certainly understand that the nephews receive more rebuke from us than they do instruction, we did too at times! So, I look forward to helping to prepare you for your turn, while we serve in our time. I’m working on something, with you in mind! Until then, Peace be with all of you in Christ’s name.
In Christ,
+JLJ
