Yesterday, at the One Million Cups Baltimore event, our founder Leticia Nortey, and Anothy Domi (Board of Directors) dove into some exciting discussions about our mission at Expanding Boundaries International. Many asked, "Why Africa? Why Ghana?" ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ญ

Here's why:
Africa is home to the world's fastest-growing, youngest population. By 2050, 1 in 4 people on the planet will be African. This youth boom is set to change the world (NY Times). We believe in tapping into this incredible potential and empowering these bright minds through education and cross-cultural experiences.

Our founder, Leticia Nortey, a 2008 Gilman International Scholar, experienced firsthand the transformative power of international study. Inspired by her journey, she started EBI to provide similar opportunities for other young people.

We're offering scholarships for a unique study tour in Ghana. It's a chance to immerse in a new culture, broaden your horizons, and join the global community.

Happy International Education Week!

From a first-generation African student's dream to a vibrant global organization, Expanding Boundaries International (EBI) is all about breaking down barriers and debunking myths surrounding international education, especially among minorities.

Our journey started with an opportunity that changed our founder's life - studying abroad. This experience ignited a passion that led to the birth of EBI. Today, we're connecting our youth through cross-cultural global education and providing equitable access to S.T.E.A.M. activities.

Last year, our explorers had an enriching experience at the JICC: Japan Information & Culture Center, Embassy of Japan. They delved into the fascinating history of US/Japan relations and got hands-on with Japanese calligraphy. ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ They even ended the day tasting delicious Japanese cuisine! ๐Ÿฃ

Join us on our journey to expand boundaries and create a global community of learners.

Project-based learning is a dynamic educational approach that actively engages students in real-world and personally meaningful projects. It's an approach that Expanding Boundaries International (EBI) has embraced wholeheartedly, as it not only enhances academic understanding but also equips students with crucial 21st-century skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and global citizenship.

This year, EBI Explorers delved into the fascinating world of aviation through a series of aviation-themed field trips. These trips allowed our students in both Ghana and Maryland to explore the intricacies of the aviation industry, providing them with invaluable hands-on experiences and insights.

By exploring aviation museums such as the Glenn L Martin Aviation Museum in Middle River, Maryland, our students could see firsthand the complex processes and technologies behind aviation. They interacted with professionals in the field, gaining a deeper appreciation of the diverse career paths within the industry. This immersive experience not only broadened their horizons but also ignited their curiosity and passion for STEAM subjects.

Moreover, these field trips fostered cross-cultural understanding. Despite being continents apart, our students in Ghana and Maryland shared a common learning journey. This mutual experience served as a platform for cultural exchange, breaking down barriers and promoting global citizenship.

Through initiatives like the aviation-themed field trips, EBI continues to unlock the boundless potential of our students, one project at a time. Join us in expanding boundaries and changing lives. Let's take learning to new heights together; consider partnering with us.

Throwback to last week Tuesday when our Executive Director, Leticia Nortey joined in with some of our community leaders to judge a cooking competition where Ted and Lory from Two Sides to the Story had a cook-off in the Exploration Commons teaching kitchen!

According to Leticia - this was a great experience; since she loves food, saying yes to being on the panel was not hard to do ๐Ÿ˜‚. "My favorite was the Pergosis; I love mushroom and beacon, so those two combinations did for me" - Leticia Nortey.

If you are looking for wholesome cooking lessons, check out the Exploration Commons schedule, you will be amazed at what's cooking.

Throwback to Last week Monday, when EBI had the opportunity to have a table at McDaniel College. It is a beautiful campus and has fantastic staff and students. We had the opportunity to share EBI's mission and some of our upcoming events. Our goal is a long-term partnership where students can intern or volunteer with us.

Our coding session is going really good, Explorers are learning the concept of coding in JavaScript. Even though they are using blocks to code, we let them check what they are doing to understand what they are coding.

Our little delema is that, we need to get serious and get our own meeting space because the Exploration Commons is getting busy and finding space to meet is getting a bit complicated because of all the amazing events going on there.

Some of our students joined remotely, thatโ€™s the only way we were able to fit in here.

Exciting news! Our coding session finally kicked off this past Saturday, and we've already learned so much.

We know that Team USA has a head start, but we're thrilled to see that Ghana is up for the challenge! A***n from Team USA is even helping his peers in Ghana understand how to read the board when coding.

Remember, making mistakes is okay because there's always room for improvement.
Our Explorers (Team USA & Ghana) love testing their knowledge through Kahoot.

If you're a Carroll County or Baltimore resident, it's not too late to sign up your child and catch up with our team! Let's work together to empower the next generation of coders.

1. Expand Your Horizons - Interning abroad exposes you to new cultures, lifestyles, and languages, giving you a deeper understanding of the world.

2. Enhance Your Resume - Employers recognize the value of having international experience on your resume, so interning abroad will give you a competitive edge in future job searches.

3. Develop a Professional Network - Interning abroad is also a great way to build an international network of professionals who can help advance your career once you're back home.

4. Gain New Perspectives - Working in a foreign country offers an opportunity to challenge yourself and reflect on how people live and work differently around the globe; it helps build a broadened outlook that will serve you well regardless of the profession or industry you pursue in life.

EBI caters to students who feel like studying abroad is out of their reach! We encourage ALL students to get a global education to prepare them for success in today's globalized economy, no matter their circumstances.โ €โ €โ €

The African Womenโ€™s Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP) assists women entrepreneurs across sub-Saharan Africa (Nigeria, Kenya) . These small and medium business owners are transforming their societies through economic development and social advocacy in their communities. Through the Department of Stateโ€™s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), approximately 30 African women entrepreneurs arrive in the United States each year to attend professional development meetings and network with U.S. policymakers, companies, industry associations, nonprofit groups, and multilateral development organizations. The three-week program allows the AWEP participants to share best practices, discuss common challenges and learn about the global economy and factors that lead to long-term business growth.

Eligibility:

There is no application for AWEP. Participants are nominated and selected annually by the staff at U.S. Embassies across Africa based on their entrepreneurial accomplishments and potential to advance relationships between their country and the United States.
