Update from CLS Alumnus Madison Baber!

Madison Baber went to CLS from kindergarten through 8th grade and is currently teaching Middle School Science. Here is her bio and what she has to say about her educational journey at CLS and how it shaped her.

"Following my graduation from CLS in 2011 I never thought that 11 years later I would be finishing up my third year teaching Middle School Science at CLS.

The small class sizes, community building, and focus on faith formation made my time at CLS foundational in my educational career. Many of the skills that my teachers installed in me are still used today and are ones that I teach my students.

These social and academic skills that I learned during my time as a CLS student helped me to be successful at Winters Mill High School, where I graduated in the top 5% of my class, and then at Salisbury University, where I made the Dean's List each semester.

Through the chapel buddies program, a mentorship between the elementary and middle school students, I first realized that I wanted to pursue a career in teaching. I am thankful that I was able to start my teaching career at CLS where my educational journey began!"

Thank you, Madison, for sharing your story.

Mrs. Ferguson's 1st grade class at CLS had a special guest visit them on Ash Wednesday. Bishop Gohl, who is the acting pastor at Grace, shared the cards with the entire congregation during service a couple of weeks ago. As a follow-up, he asked the children at the service to make shamrocks so he could deliver them personally to the class when he came for Ash Wednesday chapel service. The kids were delighted and honored to see that their Valentine's were shared and appreciated. Thank you to Bishop Gohl and his guest Vicar Charlie for visiting and sharing.

We had the joy of honoring another alumnus back to school to share information on burn prevention and fire safety. See what Creason has to say about her time at CLS and returning to CLS.

"My name is Creason Walter (Schafer) and I graduated from CLS in 2011. After my time at CLS, I graduated from WHS in 2015 and Salisbury University in 2019. Currently, I am the Community Outreach Specialist for the Burn & Trauma Programs and Injury Prevention at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, in Baltimore, MD. Johns Hopkins Children’s Center is a pediatric trauma center and burn center. A few of our main injury prevention topics include car seat safety, burn prevention, and bike safety (just to name a few).

This week is the American Burn Association’s National Burn Awareness Week, a week dedicated to educating on burn prevention. On Thursday, my colleague, Beatrice, and I visited CLS to educate the Kindergarten and First Grade classes on burn prevention and fire safety. The students learned about keeping the kitchen a “kid’s free zone” by creating their own “Stay Out of the 36” (3-foot) Kid-Free Zone” marker to use at home. The students also learned what to do in the event of a fire at their home – having a fire escape plan and a meeting place outside the home.

My time at CLS set me up for my future school and career pathways. In my high school and undergraduate studies, the smaller class sizes at CLS helped me to build that relationship with my teachers and professors and to be able to ask them questions and request additional assistance. Not to just be a number in those large college lectures, but to be a student where the professor knew my name. CLS has taught me how to be respectful and courteous to fellow students, teachers, and co-workers. CLS prepared me for being successful in school and in my career."

Thank you, Creason, for sharing your experience.

Grant DeVivo graduated from CLS in 2016 and from Mount Saint Joseph High School in 2020. He is currently studying business communications and playing club baseball at Stevenson University in Owings Mills, MD in hopes of becoming a play-by-play broadcaster.

He recently made a visit to CLS on December 16th and completed a presentation for the school's 7th and 8th graders about the transition into high school and the high school experience. Topics that were covered included how to get involved and be active, how to make friends, what to expect in the education and workload, and how to live in each and every moment (not rushing high school).

Grant said, "This was actually a final assignment for me for CM_300 Advanced Public Speaking at Stevenson University, and when I thought of my topic for this speech, I thought why not return to CLS, a place I know very well and love, and give some insight to their middle schoolers about the high school experience? Why not CLS?! CLS is a place I am very comfortable at and well-recognized at, hence why I chose to speak here. It gave me a chance to recall the days when I was a student here, when I sat in the very same seats as the students whom I presented to. It reminded me of how CLS got me set up for the rest of my life and how CLS was doing the same for the present students. CLS's education got me ready for high school and beyond, while at the same time it enlightened my faith and connected me to God more than ever. That was crucial as I headed off to MSJ afterward, where I could continue to worship God. CLS did a lot of positive things for me, and I am smarter and wiser because of what I learned from an educational and personal standpoint many years ago at CLS. I couldn't be more thankful for the school and I still think about CLS long after I've left."

This is a great testament to God's work at CLS. Thank you, Grant, for sharing your experience.

Each week, students write prayers for our weekly chapel service. This week, the chapel prayers were written by half of our second grade students. The other half will share their prayers next week. This is a wonderful reminder of the faith formation that is happening in the hearts of our students.❤

Dear God,
Thank you for food and water and shelter. Please heal people that have COVID. Thank you for all the teachers and thank you for dying on the cross. God, you are lovely; thank you for crushing the devil. I pray that COVID-19 goes away. Thank you for food, water, and nature. Please help the endangered animals spread more so they won't get extinct. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. ❤

‘A year of unprecedented growth’: Carroll County private schools did best to maintain in-person education amid COVID

A citation request submitted to Governor Hogan by a parent and awarded to Mrs. Gilbart for her leadership this past school year is representative of the effort and dedication she shows to the school, the students, the families, and the staff. In an unprecedented year with Covid-19 restrictions, Mrs. Gilbart led CLS to a full-year of 170 days of in-person instruction without any school related Covid-19 outbreaks.

This is an amazing article which features a detailed interview with Mrs. Gilbart. If you know of anyone looking for a private, K-8 education, please share this article with them.

‘A year of unprecedented growth’: Carroll County private schools did best to maintain in-person education amid COVID Leaders of Carroll County’s private schools reflected on a year of mostly in-person learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, how its enrollment has changed as families transitioned from public schools and what next school year could look like.
