Spring is in the air at CLS! We welcome the warmer weather, longer days, and more opportunities to gather as a school community. Our students in grades K-3 began the afterschool soccer program hosted by Coach Frank from Level 5 Athletics. This is a fun program for athletes of all skill levels and will meet for 7 sessions after school on Fridays this spring.

On March 17, students in grades 4-8 gathered in the school gymnasium for the St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Ball. The Family Partnership Program (FPP) organized a special evening including a DJ, photo booth, delicious food, and lots of green and gold décor! This was the first time CLS hosted a school dance for our rising and current middle school students, and we are grateful to the FPP for their work planning and executing such a fun event.

For the first time since 2019, we are delighted to host our largest fundraiser of the year, the annual CLS Basket and Bag Bingo! We have missed gathering in person for this event, which has been held virtually for the past few years. We have been blessed to receive generous prize contributions and sponsorships from CLS families, and we hope you and your family can experience this wonderful event. Bag and Basket Bingo is open to the public and is a great way to introduce CLS to friends and family.

The school campus will be closed for Easter break April 5-10 for our staff and families to rest and celebrate Easter with their loved ones. There will be much to look forward to in April and May including Spirit Week, the Scholastic Book Fair, Grandparents’ Day, and a Spring Musical! Stay tuned for more details, and please feel free to reach out to volunteer for any of these upcoming events. Our school community is what makes CLS such a special place for our students, staff, and families. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Mrs. Segessenman's 4th-grade class had a project using persuasive writing to sell a holiday sweater. To participate, the student had to design a sweater and then use persuasive writing skills to explain why their holiday sweater was the best. The top 3 winners received money to use in the school store as part of the classroom economy project. This classroom economy project teaches the children the skill of using money to buy things, including living essentials such as rent. They pay rent to use their desk. Mrs. Gilbart presented the top three winners with their "checks" yesterday.

3rd Place - Grace's sweater design shows a cozy fireplace with lights and a s'mores scent for a festive look. She won $300.
2nd Place - Aiden's sweater had a good-looking candy cane heart with a peppermint scent to bring Christmas cheer to everyone. He won $500.
1st Place - Evan's sweater had heating and cooling capabilities, is water and flame-proof, and had lights. It also came with free pants and a bracelet. It was truly a festive comfort. He won $1000.

This was a great way to incorporate persuasive writing into a contest that gave the students a fun incentive to work hard.

Congratulations to the winners!

This week is National School Counselor Week. We are so blessed to have Mrs. Monroe at CLS. Mrs. Monroe shared with me why she wanted to be a school counselor and how she ended up at CLS. After being a classroom teacher for 6 years, she wanted to do so much more to help students with emotional and social needs and challenges that impacted their ability to learn but did not have the time while she was teaching. She earned her Master's in Counseling from Hood College. While she was in the final stages of her program, she was placed at CLS to complete her internship. Mrs. Monroe said that she felt welcomed from the first day and felt more like a staff than an intern. As a result of Covid and the increased enrollment and student needs, CLS Principal Mrs. Gilbart was in need of a counselor to fill a newly created position. She reached out to her and luckily for us, Mrs. Monroe said, "God placed me here at the right time and I knew this is where I wanted to be." This is Mrs. Monroe's second year on staff and we could not be more delighted to have her! Thank you for all you do for all of the students at CLS.

If you are looking for a private school, here is what the Bukszar Family has to say about Carroll Lutheran School. Their son, Henry, is in the 1st grade.

"CLS has become our 'village' helping us to raise a kind and respectful young man."

Are you considering private school? Carroll Lutheran School is holding group tours on Tuesday, January 17th at 4 p.m. and Monday, January 30th at 10 a.m. These tours are open to any families interested in learning about the exceptional education, formed in faith at CLS. Please contact the office at 410-848-1050 to reserve your spot today. Spaces are limited.

The season of giving is here, but as many of our past and current families know, service to the community is a core value for our school community all year. A significant part of receiving an exceptional education, formed in faith, is teaching our students to ask: “How can we serve our neighbors in need?” CLS has partnerships with local organizations and works to support their missions each week during our weekly chapel service. Students bring weekly offerings to support organizations such as Carroll County Food Sunday, Habitat for Humanity, and Shepherd’s Staff, among others. In the last three weeks alone, CLS students donated 349 cans, boxes, and food packages for two food banks in Carroll County. This is the perfect opportunity for teachers and families to discuss the importance of giving back.

CLS continues its longstanding tradition of participating in Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan’s Purse this Christmas season. The project delivers not only the joy of what, for many kids, is their first gift ever but also gives them a tangible expression of God’s love. This past week, CLS students filled 121 shoeboxes with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items that will be delivered to children worldwide.

Students will also be impacting locally this Christmas season through our community outreach project with Shepherd’s Staff. We are collecting items for infants, toddlers, and school-aged children so they can also experience the joy of Christmas. We will also have a Giving Tree in the foyer for convenient donation drop-off.

If you know of an organization that could use the blessing of CLS, please reach out to the school at 410-848-1050. Although we cannot guarantee that we can support all organizations, as a faith-based community, we can include you in our prayers and continue to find ways to help you.

11/28/2022

As you prepare to open your hearts to support worthy causes tomorrow, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to Carroll Lutheran School. Your gift of any amount will enable us to make exceptional education accessible to every child by keeping tuition within reach and shoring up finances for generations to come. https://bit.ly/3ODg4Wt.

CLS welcomed five veterans living at Carroll Lutheran Village to our school on November 11th. These five veterans represented each of the five branches: Mr. George Fanshaw of the Navy, Mr. Bob Nichol of the Air Force, Mr. Howard Kramer of the Marines, Mr. Bob Anderson of the Coast Guard, and last but not least, Mr. Jim Cole of the Army. Due to time limitations, the veterans could not meet with all classes. However, each class met with at least one of the veterans, heard their stories, and asked questions. Thank you for your service, visiting, and sharing your stories with our students.

CLS's kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Drozinski or better known as Mrs. D, was nominated for The Light of Carroll Award. The Light of Carroll Award recognizes the work of individuals, groups, and businesses in promoting and supporting the power of literacy through acts of extraordinary kindness, courage, selflessness, or education in our community. Although she did not win the award, she has been dedicated to educating children at CLS for 22 years. Of these 22 years, ten have been in kindergarten and twelve in the 1st grade. We are blessed to have Mrs. D, and we thank her for all she does for the children at CLS.

CLS has received approximately $50,000 in grant money just this year. In addition to money, our grants have provided an influx of valuable and useful items. This is a picture of 6 new laptops for our staff. In addition to these laptops, we are also receiving 12 Chromebooks for our students. The 9 grants we have applied for and received include technology and other school supplies such as picnic tables, air purifiers, projectors, curriculum, and other classroom supplies. These grants greatly help with the operational cost of the school. Please contact the school if you know of additional resources that can assist us in getting more grant money or other non-cash donations.

Now that October is here, students and staff are settling into the new school year. For the first time since March 2020, things are starting to feel normal again. It is exciting to have the building buzzing with more visitors and fun field trips and events planned for the school community. Kindergarten, first, and second-grade students will be going on a fall field trip later this month. Students will visit the Fountain Rock Nature Center in Walkersville where they will participate in a program about life cycles and traits of animals. They will have an opportunity to explore some of the hiking trails at the center and enjoy a picnic lunch. In the afternoon, students will visit Glade Valley Corn Maze, a pumpkin farm in Frederick. Students will enjoy a hayride, pick a pumpkin, visit farm animals, and a corn maze.

Middle school students in grades 6-8 resumed the special tradition of attending Outdoor School at Camp Hashawha in September. They learned about watersheds, assessing the health of water habitats, and biodiversity. They worked on reducing waste at meals and made it into the book of groups that had less than one pound of total waste at all meals. Later this month, the Family Partnership Program is planning a movie night to give middle school students the opportunity to enjoy some pizza, and popcorn and fellowship with one another.

One of the biggest highlights of the year so far was having the mobile science lab visit for an entire week from the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation. Students from all grades
participated in engaging lessons and experiments about the importance of agriculture in our everyday lives. We are all also looking forward to the annual Fun Run later this month. This
event will raise money for shade canopies for outdoor classroom and picnic areas, engaging new instructional materials, playground upgrades, and improvements to the safety and security of our school building among other items. Students have already done a fantastic job fundraising for this exciting event!

Coming together as a school community is what makes CLS such a special place for students, staff, and families. Stay tuned for more upcoming events including our Fall Harvest Festival in November and Christmas program in December!
