CREATURE FEATURE FRIDAY!!! Diamond back terrapin addition!! These guys are Marylands state reptile! They live in brackish water like the Chesapeake bay! We love our locals!! It’s really important to keep the bay clean for guys like this! She is a crucial species to the delicate ecosystem. She is actually deemed a vulnerable species now due to things like boats, crabbing and habitat loss. Due to her injuries she now lives a lavish life here at bear branch. With a diet of shrimp, fish, greens and berries!! YUM!!! She is getting a tank upgrade very soon! HUGE THANK YOU TO FHBB!! Thank you so much for funding her upgrade!!

Please note: The Annual Adult Egg Hunt is taking place this evening at Hashawha Environmental Center. Volunteers are hard at work preparing for tonight’s event. If you are hiking the trails today and happen to see Easter eggs, please do not pick them up! Any eggs not found by participants will be collected by volunteers after the event.
This event is organized by the Friends of Hashawha and Bear Branch, an organization dedicated to raising funds for projects around the park, including supplies for Animal Ambassadors and the Butterfly House. They also offer free events such as Bear Branch’s Earth Day celebration. While registration for tonight’s event is closed, please check out their page and website www.friendsofhbb.org to find out how to support this wonderful organization and their efforts at Hashawha and Bear Branch.
CREATURE FEATURE!!! Today we had Ranger out to talk to you about nesting season! It’s a very interesting time to work with the birds because they are a bit more moody. Sometimes her neighbor Buddy, the male red tailed hawk can be heard yelling like a dinosaur during this time of year. She has been crafting a beautiful nest with mostly white pine sticks!
Another raptor info post!
Cleo, Hashawha’s Bald Eagle, has a slight injury to her left leg. She may be sitting in the ground or leaning a bit to the left, but she is okay! She visited a vet on Friday and is being closely monitored by Bear Branch staff.
CREATURE FEATURE FRIDAY WOOOO!!!! Come by and check out our wood frog tadpoles! These guys are some of the first frogs to come out during spring and they have a pretty recognizable call. It sounds like a duck quacking!! During the winter they actually hibernate on land hidden in leaves! Their blood acts just like antifreeze!! The breeding season is from March through April and the females lay 500-3000 eggs!!!! They go from tadpole to froglet pretty quickly and the transition is about 65-130 days! Plenty of time to come and check them out!!!

Hashawha’s Screech Owls are safe!
Our aviary did sustain some roof damage yesterday, particularly the Screech Owl enclosure. Mort and Murray rode out the storm at Bear Branch Nature Center and were not in the mew when the roof was damaged.
All of the other enclosures are fine and our other raptors are all safe and well.
