Register now for a 60 minute yoga class and 30 minute guided meditation to honor the Pink Moon. The April full moon is called the Pink Moon for the spring phlox that blooms this time of year. This nature-themed practice will help warm our bodies and minds in preparation for the coming spring. Yoga will be indoors. The meditation will be outside, weather permitting.

While the sugaring season may now be over, we still have plenty of Syrup for you to get your fix! Stop by the Nature Center to purchase local Maryland Maple Syrup for all your pancake needs!

Generally, local Parks and Nature Centers are NOT licensed to accept or take care of injured or orphaned wildlife! So what should you do?! While you might believe the tiny bunny or baby bird needs your help, most of the time they have mom and dad right nearby watching and teaching them. You can help the most by leaving the babies alone! Unsure if a wild animal DOES need your help? At Phoenix Wildlife Center created this link to help you out: https://www.phoenixwildlife.org/help-i-found-a. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on which animal needs assistance for more information about how you can help them! Park staff is more than happy to assist you in finding a rehabber closest to you and will provide contact information should you need it!”

It’s official! After a month of voting and a relatively neck and neck race, the winning name is – SCUTE!

Did you know that the scutes (pronounced “scoots”) on a turtle are the specialized plates on their shell? Since turtles never change their shells when they grow larger, they instead shed their old, smaller scutes, leaving a bigger one underneath!

Our big girl has shed quite a few scutes in her lifetime to reach the size she is! Diamondbacks also get their name from the diamond-shaped, concentric patterns and grooves on their scutes. Thank you for all who voted and a special shout-out to the Naturalist’s favorite write-in vote of “Tom Shelleck."

Come visit Scute at the nature center soon!
