Higher Learning is a non-profit academic enrichment program for underserved youth ages 11-17. To promote ethical, socially conscious leadership and action, we think, do and go!
Born of a desire to actively transform the lives of young people who have insufficient access to the social, cultural and economic resources critical to academic and life success, Dr. Roxanna Harlow left a tenured position in academia, founded Higher Learning, Inc. in January 2009, and launched its pilot program in June 2009. Higher Learning, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, provides active educational enrichment for underserved youth of color ages 11-17. Our programs arm students with the skills, experiences, and habits of thinking that are ultimately expected of them, but are part of no standard curriculum. While enhancing facility with reading, writing, and speaking, Higher Learning emphasizes important skills for the 21st century such as global awareness, creativity, and team work. Central to the program’s mission are opportunities for local and global travel to which youth without financial means would not ordinarily have access. Dr. Harlow is a sociologist with expertise in educational and social inequality.

Dear Higher Learning Family,
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I relay news about Higher Learning alumnus Michael Arthur who passed away early in the morning on April 10, 2017. He would have turned 20 years old in November. As some of you know, Michael dealt with a number heath challenges which he always seemed to take in stride, continuing on even when he was in pain. He has now gone on.
There’s so much I could say about Michael – he was a multiple award winning Higher Learning student, etcetera, etcetera. But the most important thing about him was that in his short life, he had such a positive impact on so many. He was kind, helpful, warm, and supportive. He was thoughtful and intelligent. He was well liked and loved. He was someone people enjoyed being around, and he enriched the lives of so many of us. He was good people. There’s no better legacy to leave than having made the world a better place by your presence in it, and Michael certainly did that. I hope we can all say the same when it’s our time. Michael will be sorely missed.
As you can imagine, his family is trying to come to terms with this unexpected and unimaginable loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. If you’re so inclined, you can send condolences to Michael and Sandra Arthur, 676 Spring Meadow Dr., Westminster, MD 21158. I will post another message once I receive information about funeral services.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on and be grateful for our time with him!
