Student-faculty summer research inspires landscape painting exhibition on view in Rice Gallery | McDaniel College 11/07/2023

“Light and Color, Space and Place: Landscape Painting on Site and in the Studio,” a group exhibition in McDaniel's Esther Prangley Rice Gallery, showcases landscapes inspired by student-faculty summer research conducted by Steven Pearson, the Joan Develin Coley Chair in Creative Expression and the Arts, and Art majors Sarah Mendez, Lacy Newhouse, Zoe Shelby, and Mandy Smith.
Other works on display are by the Baltimore Plein Air Club, Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters, painters Hans Habeger of Chicago, Sean Sauer of Philadelphia, and Erin Raedeke of Washington, D.C., McDaniel Provost Flavius Lilly, and Nora Sturges, a Towson University painting professor.
The show opens today and runs through Friday, Dec. 8. An opening reception takes place Thursday, Nov. 9, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Last night, members of our campus community joined together for a Vigil for Peace to reflect on the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Israel. The event was held in collaboration with students from Jewish and Palestinian backgrounds to show support for one another and honor the lives lost. Those in attendance also had the opportunity to write messages that will be shared on campus. As Richard Smith, associate provost for equity and belonging, said during the vigil, “Tonight, we stand together... our shared aspiration is a profound hope for humanity, a hope that one day peace will prevail.”

We are excited to announce this year’s Grand Marshal of the Westminster Fallfest Parade on September 21 at 7PM.

McDaniel College’s Alumni of the Year, Lee Primm is a dedicated leader and volunteer in the Westminster community. Lee is a decorated Vietnam War veteran, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy. A retired banker, he remains actively involved at McDaniel and has served on numerous boards in Westminster and Carroll County.

Marcus “Lee” Primm is a dedicated leader and volunteer in the Westminster community. In 2022, he was recognized as McDaniel College’s Alumni of the Year.
In addition to his long-term involvement with McDaniel, Lee has served on the Board of Directors of LifeBridge Health and remains on the board of Carroll Hospital, having served for four years as its chair. He has served on numerous other boards, including the Boys and Girls Club of Westminster, United Way of Carroll County, and the Carroll District of the Boy Scouts of America, which presented him with the 2002 Carroll County Good Scout of the Year award. He is also a member of the Westminster Rotary Club, earning the 2008 Citizen of the Year, and was a founding member of the Community Foundation of Carroll County, which honored him and his wife, Louna, with the Family Philanthropist of the Year Award in 2014. Primm is also a past president of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce. In 2019, he was named volunteer of the year by The Arc of Carroll County, where he is currently a director of the Harold and Audrey Trumpower Foundation.

A decorated Vietnam War veteran, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, and a retired banker, Lee earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1989.

Our Story

McDaniel College is a four-year, independent college of the liberal arts and sciences. Founded in 1867 as one of the first coeducational colleges in the nation and the first south of the Mason-Dixon Line, McDaniel is a diverse, student-centered community of 1,600 undergraduates and 1,400 graduate students.

As one of 40 “Colleges That Change Lives,” McDaniel is committed to access and affordability. More than 90 percent of students receive some type of financial assistance and McDaniel invests over $40 million annually in grants and scholarships. Students can choose from more than 70 undergraduate programs of study, including pre-professional specializations and student-designed majors, plus over 20 graduate programs. Academics center on the McDaniel Plan, a customized, interdisciplinary curriculum that emphasizes experiential learning and student-faculty collaboration to develop the unique potential in every student.

The McDaniel Commitment guarantees every student two experiential learning opportunities, including service learning, study abroad, student-faculty collaborative research, credit-based internship or independent study. Students also enroll in first-year seminars and senior capstone projects. Special opportunities abound through McDaniel's Center for Experience and Opportunity, The Encompass Distinction program in innovation and entrepreneurship, the Honors Program, and Global Initiatives including the Global Fellows program.

Represented by the Green Terror, its 24 athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division III Centennial Conference. Additionally, students are involved in over 90 student organizations, intramural sports, and fraternities and sororities. McDaniel offers access to both Baltimore and Washington, D.C., plus a European campus in Budapest, Hungary.
