Today, Alpha Kappa Alpha joins Americans across the country in celebrating Juneteenth as a national holiday for the first time in our nation’s history. We commend Congress for the bi-partisan legislation which formally recognizes the end of slavery and acknowledges the citizenship of people of the African diaspora who made significant contributions to the fabric of this nation. The commemoration of the Juneteenth holiday also lends credence to America’s self-proclamation as the “Land of the Free.”
While recognized by the African-American community for more than 150 years, June 19 — also known as Freedom Day — will now bear witness to America’s capacity to fulfill its promise of liberty and justice for all. This step is an important one, but we still have miles to go. Structural and systemic racism continue to erect barriers from the classroom to the voting precinct. Certainly, it is important to acknowledge progress, but it is equally important to continue to make the kind of good trouble John Lewis urged until this nation fully lives up to the promises of this democracy for all of its citizens.
May this day serve as a proud reminder of who we are as a people and the intestinal fortitude that would not allow us to give up until the dignity of our collective personhood was recognized. We encourage you to take time to reflect on the resilience of our ancestors, celebrate the contributions of our people, and imagine the possibilities for our future. But we still have miles to go. So, in the words of the Black National Anthem, “Let us march on till victory is won.” Happy Juneteenth!
