Worked with a lot of women today for the free women's shooting event with LAID. This is a super basic introductory course to shooting for those who have limited or zero experience. These are pictures of first time shooters - meaning before today, they never shot a handgun before. The distance is about 4 yards, and the women only shot 20 rounds.

The lane I worked in had a G***k 17 with a trijicon RMR optic. Most other lanes had handguns with irons. Trust and believe I can get students to perform well with irons, but there are way too many instructors who believe that students should start on irons and then matriculate to a dot. I'm not one of those instructors. I intentionally chose this lane because I know that starting new students off on a red dot optic makes them better earlier, which boosts confidence. Additionally, it flattens the learning curve if they downgrade to iron sights. The targets speak for themselves.

Anyway, I'm thinking about hosting a red dot optic class class. Any interest?

2025 Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO, aka red flag) report for Michigan.

407 issued.
37 people charged with 75 crimes.

If we use CPL holders as the population, this means that out of 845,000 people, 0.048% were red flagged and 0.0044% were charged with a crime. The report does not specify how many individuals were found guilty.

Looking at the numbers only, in my opinion this data shows that the cost of enforcement is likely not worth the laws being on the books.

Additionally, the report is missing critical info like the cause/reason for filing the ERPO, who the petitioners were (friends, family, or LE).

Fi****ms restrictions impose high political and cultural costs while delivering limited and inconsistent evidence of population-level reductions in mass shootings or interpersonal violence. The strongest empirical support for gun-related policy interventions is in su***de prevention, not the outcomes most often cited to justify broad restrictions. These policies disproportionately alienate persuadable voters - including working-class, Black, and rural communities - who recognize that lawful firearm ownership is tied to personal and community safety. For Black Americans, firearm ownership has historically functioned as a means of self, family, and community defense where state protection was absent or unequal, or in many cases, the state was the violent actor. Democrats would achieve greater violence reduction and broader electoral appeal by prioritizing economic stability, targeted enforcement against violent offenders, expanded mental healthcare access, and community-based prevention programs (CVI works) rather than regulating lawful ownership.

For many on the political Right, support for the Second Amendment functions less as a principled commitment to individual liberty and more as a proxy for broader cultural and partisan identity, reducing a constitutional right to a loyalty signal rather than a serious legal or civic position. That dynamic is reinforced by reliance on the slogan “shall not be infringed,” which substitutes absolutism for constitutional reasoning and invites courts and policymakers to dismiss legitimate Second Amendment claims as unserious. When gun rights are treated as shorthand for opposition to government, social change, or political opponents, the conversation drifts away from responsible ownership and historical context. Defending the Second Amendment is better served by grounded arguments rooted in individual liberty, self-defense, and constitutional tradition than by ideological shortcuts that collapse under scrutiny.

Violence reduction and constitutional rights are not opposing goals. Evidence-based policy, responsible ownership, and serious constitutional reasoning can and must coexist. Public safety debates should be grounded in evidence, not ideology. When policy fails to deliver results, it should be reevaluated - regardless of which party supports it. Neither absolutism nor overreach produces safer communities. Real progress requires honesty about what works, what doesn’t, and who bears the cost. A serious approach to public safety respects lawful ownership, targets violent behavior, and centers communities most affected by violence.
