Lysol Disinfectant is approved for Mac’s Abacus
We tested using Lysol to disinfect Mac’s Abacus and found it safe to use. Soaking for just a few minutes in Lysol solution should be adequate to disinfect. Our standard recommendation of washing in dish detergent is probably also adequate to remove germs and viruses.
The Tests:
- We selected an Abacus that was built four years ago.
- We mixed Lysol’s recommended “Reliable Disinfectant” formula (2 1/2 tablespoons per Gallon of water - which is the same as 1 teaspoon Lysol to 2 cups water).
Test 1: We soaked Mac’s Abacus in a pan of Lysol solution for 5 minutes, followed by a plain water rinse, shake off and let dry for an hour.
Test 2: We soaked Mac’s Abacus in a pan of Lysol solution for 1 hour, followed by a plain water rinse, shake off and let dry for an hour.
After both tests, we checked for visible changes and measured the “Move Force” on each row of beads. We found there were no significant changes after each Test. We did notice a slight fresh “Lysol” smell afterward, but it dissipated in a few days.
All Parts of Mac’s Abacus are non-toxic and washable using standard detergents (Do not use caustic solutions.) Mac’s Abacus is built from hardwood, with Branded text and has an FDA approved Lacquer coating. The Beads are made of the same plastic as are milk bottles and all colorants are FDA approved. Mac’s Abacus is very durable, washable and safe.
