Today we celebrate Juneteenth. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the last enslaved African Americans in the U.S. were free. This occurred more than two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Often called "America's second Independence Day," it is a time of celebration, remembrance, and ongoing reflection on civil rights.
