We would like to introduce you to our Graduate Assistant, Rachel Curti! ☺️ We are so happy to have you with us. 🦉☺️📚🎉

"My name is Rachel Curti, and I'm the new Graduate Assistant! I come from Dalton, Massachusetts, but I was born and raised in Lincoln, Rhode Island. I graduated with my bachelor's in creative writing from Rhode Island College in 2025. After a year off, I'm returning for my Master's in English and initial licensure to teach.

When I'm not working or in school, I often venture back to Rhode Island to spend time with friends from my old ballet company, which I danced with for eight years. My goal is to become a professor in creative writing and ultimately, to become a published author. I'm currently working on a fiction piece—a sapphic body-swap novel, as well as a memoir.

"Hi everyone! My name is Cassidy Murillo (neé Irzyk). I graduated from Westfield State in Fall of 2021 with a major in English and minor in history as a Commonwealth Honors Scholar, and graduated from Western New England Law in Spring of 2025 with my Juris Doctor. I took the Bar exam in July of 2025 and got sworn in as an attorney in November. Now, I’m a solo attorney in Westfield and I perform work in the realms of children and family law, personal injury, and a separate area of family law. In my spare time, I love being with my husband and our dog, reading, and crafting. Im so excited to take over WSU’s English Instagram page tomorrow, show you what an average day in my life looks like as a Western Mass attorney, and chat with folks about any questions you may have as you consider your next steps ♥️ See you soon!"

ENGL 612: Teaching Writing With and Against Generative Al

🦉This 3-credit course can count towards the Western Mass Writing Project Teaching Writing Pedagogy Certificate!

🦉Writing and teaching in the age of generative Al is fraught. The central question of this course is: How can we promote critical Al literacy amongst our students while ensuring students learn to write? To arrive at potentia answers to this question, we will begin by immersing ourselves in the debate surrounding Al and writing/writing instruction. In doing so, we will explore the ethical issues associated with Al and develop an understanding of critical Al literacy. Students in this course will experiment with using Al in both the teaching and writing process and will leave this course with a set 1 practices and principles that will guide them as Al continues to reshape the educational landscape.

🦉Professor Catherine Savini is the director of the Writing Center and the Writing Across the Curriculum Program. She participated in the American Colleges and Universities Institute on Al, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum and her opinion piece We Can't Ban Al, But We Can Friction Fix It was published in Inside Higher Education.
