International Programs at Westfield State University

As we finish out the Spring 2026 semester, we want to congratulate all graduating students and give a big shout out to all of our students who studied abroad, participated in National Student Exchange, or came to us as an international student. You did it!

It isn't an exaggeration when you hear someone call studying abroad a life-changing experience.

From exploring the world to learning more about yourself, there are so many benefits to traveling as a student. Studying abroad gives students the chance to gain new cultural perspectives, learn through immersive experiences, and grow academically, personally, and professionally.

The world is yours.

Westfield State's "Go Global" programs are courses that travel for 1-3 weeks with Westfield State faculty and staff.

These courses allow students to get hands on travel experience related to the content of the course. Often, travel takes place over spring break or early summer, with the occasional course traveling during winter break.

Courses vary each academic year, so be sure to check in!

You don't have to go abroad to see the world.

National Student Exchange gives students the opportunity to study at one of the other member campuses for a semester or academic year.

There are a number of reasons that National Student Exchange might be for you. Maybe you don't want to go as far from home or you want to stay near relatives. Maybe you'd like to save money. Maybe you are studying a subject that is harder to take abroad. Maybe there's no 'reason' at all!

There's so many places you could spend the summer, a semester, or an academic year... But what if you can't decide on one destination?

You might be interested in a program that travels to multiple destinations.

Some of these programs are structured more like group travel, while others still allow students to have a more independent study abroad experience.

Traveling to an "unconventional" study abroad destination can give students opportunities that they may not find in more traditional study abroad destinations. From being fully immersed in the local culture and less in tourist culture to - often - having a lower cost of living, students will see benefits in exploring these often overlooked destinations.

It can be hard to find the time to study abroad while staying on track to graduate, holding a job, participating in campus activities... Just because you're busy doesn't mean there's no way for you to go abroad.

By participating in a winter or summer program, you will only be away for anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks - entirely dependent on the program you select - and it will not interrupt your academic plan at Westfield State.

One of the best ways to learn a new language is by immersing yourself in it. Whether you're a beginner or advanced speaker, there are study abroad language programs for you.

Many language-centric programs take place in the summer, so you won't fall behind on your other studies. Additionally, if you're looking to go abroad for longer, most semester-long programs allow students to take a language class as an elective course.
