Very sad news. No matter your faith, Father Dean was a presence on campus. RIP.
Dear Westfield State friends,
It is with a heavy heart that we share that Fr. John Dean passed on Saturday, February 24th at 12:45pm. He was peaceful, comfortable and surrounded by his loving family, friends and a few of his beloved Westfield State alumni. He was remembered dearly at Sunday’s mass at the Interfaith Center. We will share more details about services as we receive them.
May he always know that he was beloved by so very many, impacted more lives than he ever knew and helped make life at Westfield State just that much better by being here.
Please share any pictures or stories with us. We will forward all to his family. Thank you. May he rest in eternal peace.

Regardless of belief, we were very lucky to have the positive attitude and good humor of Fr. Dean as a part of our time at Westfield. Please consider sending a card to the address below.
Dear Westfield State Alums,
We received this message about our beloved Fr. Dean this morning. Please consider sending a card, note or memory or all of the above. Many of you were married by him, or remember attending Mass in Wilson Hall or received pizza when you were hungry. . .and so much more. . .Thank you, in advance, for your kind support.
Good morning,
Fr. John Dean was the face of Westfield State back when my husband graduated. He loved working at the college and would so appreciate any cards or good wishes at this time. He recently had a stroke and lost the ability to speak. His niece, Carolyn Dean Green is caring for him down in VA. I believe he has a page if anyone would like to "friend him" some good stories. I'm was hoping you could get a few college students or faculty members to write him a quick card for Valentine's Day.
Fr. John Dean's temporary address:
Sheltering Arms
8254 Atlee Road
Mechanicsville, VA 23116

I think we can agree that destroying a campus landmark is a disappointment.

We don't post as often as we should on this page, but this man was a legacy at Westfield, no matter your beliefs. I'm sure many of us have fond memories from his headstands at orientation to perhaps attending a wedding where he was the ever-entertaining officiant.
Thanks for your service to the community, Fr. Dean!
The Westfield State Interfaith Breakfast is happening on April 15th and we’re looking for some help from our alumni! We are looking for memories of your time in the Interfaith Center and with Father Dean – stories, photos, and more – so you can contribute to our breakfast display.
A special form for these memories will be made live next week. For now, dig through those photos and memory boxes and get ready to celebrate a wonderful Center and an amazing man! Feel free to start sharing your memories in the comments section below. Thanks for your support!
