I was recently told by my 6 year old that I am not very good at pretending with Barbies. Ouch! It stung a little, but I thought about it and she was totally right. I didn’t realize it, but I was wanting to have a perfect set-up, have a plan and then execute it. I was approaching our play as an adult with a checklist.
So I stepped back and watched for a moment…
For her, it just flowed naturally. She was in an imaginative world and letting her mind do its thing.
Did she have a plan? Was it logical and thought out?
…nope!
But was it fun? Did she learn something? Was it beneficial for her development?
ABSOLUTELY!!
Imagination is alive within each child and it’s our job to give them opportunities to use it and expand their world.
Let them PLAY!
