My husband, Blake, and I moved to Westfield 8 years ago, but we were familiar with the area long before. Three generations of my husband’s family have camped in Chautauqua County during the spring, summer, and fall months for many decades. After my husband and I married, we drove 50 miles from our home in Hamburg to Brookside Beach Campground to camp with our two Labradors and then with our son after he was born. We spent many weekends taking long walks exploring the village, the farmer’s market; the playground at Welch Field, visiting the market at Crossroads, Barcelona harbor and other businesses in the area. With the arrival of our second child, we decided to sell our camper, but still spent many weekends traveling back to visit family that camped here and our favorite Westfield places.
After selling our camper, we missed spending our weekend summers in Westfield. We now had three kids, three and under, in a small house bursting at the seams. Blake has always enjoyed browsing through real estate listings and would often send me links to houses in Westfield as they would pop up for sale. Despite telling Blake no many times, he kept sending me a link to this one house, a giant fixer upper. With a little convincing to “just have a look” at this house, we made the 50-mile journey in a snowstorm on Valentine’s Day 2015. After climbing over snowbanks, we made it in the front door (It was one of those years we had a lot of snow here), and knew it was the next house for our growing family. After touring the house and lunching at the Parkview Café to talk it over, we decided to put in an offer on the house and list our current home. What happened next, we did not expect - our bid was accepted on the house here in Westfield AND we had sold our current home at the time in 5 days! It was meant to be!
We moved into our home in the spring of 2015 with 3 small kids and 2 dogs. We’ve spent countless hours renovating our old fixer upper, turning it into our cozy family home full of life and laughter. We now lovingly refer to our house as our Valentine’s Day house.
The small-town community feel of Westfield draws people to it, including our parents who have followed us here – my parents live here in the village and Blake’s parents live nearby in Dunkirk. Westfield is a wonderful community, with many unique businesses and ways to experience the great outdoors year-round which is why so many families live here with friends and tourists flocking to come for a visit. Our village is not only a great place to visit but a great place to raise children and grow old. The last eight years have been an exciting journey and I cannot wait to see what the future brings for our family and community.
