The Wandering Peacock is having an Art in the Garden Party on Saturday, the 22nd from 5-7pm. There will be live music, pleinair painting, vendors, and tastes from the Sharing Garden. Anyone can try out the pottery wheel and there will be an area to paint rocks.

There’s still time to register for August 12–14 at the Westfield Washington Public Library. Sign up for one day, two days, or all three — whatever works for your schedule.

Kids ages 7–14 will spend the day building, creating, tackling LEGO engineering challenges, and coding LEGO robots with Scratch. It’s a full day of structured STEM fun while giving parents one more childcare option before school is back in session.

4th Grade Student Essay Competition – Proud to be an American, Proud to be a Hoosier!

Indiana is a great place to learn. Fourth graders! Write an essay, and you could be honored at a Statehood Day celebration!

Four winners will be selected. EACH WINNER will receive a CollegeChoice 529 Deposit of $529.00 made possible by the Indiana Education Savings Authority!

Entry forms are available here: https://www.in.gov/library/icb/statehood/and are attached to this email along with a lesson plan guide in case you would like one.

— ESSAY CONTEST RULES AND DEADLINES —

The competition is open to any Indiana 4th grade public, private, or homeschooled student, in the 2026-2027 school year.
A panel of judges will choose 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place winners.
Essays must range from 100 to 300 words, handwritten or typed.
Essays must be submitted with an entry form.
Individual entries should use the 2026 Individual Entry form.

All Entries may be mailed OR emailed.

Writing Prompt: Proud to be an American, Proud to be a Hoosier! Essays should be well organized and reflective of the theme. Judges are looking forward to seeing your students’ interpretation of the theme. Learning can encompass all kinds of things like travel, reading, experiences, passions, and so much more. We hope this theme builds awareness and appreciation for the Hoosier state.

Winners of the essay contest will be honored on Wednesday, December 11, 2026 at an in-person ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse or the Indiana State Museum. The winners will be expected to record their essays as well.
