NOW YOU KNOW!

Many of you, I am sure, remember when we began our high school year as freshmen. One of the events, initiation, was on our minds. What were the Senior class going to make us do?

Freshmen initiation ended around the 60s. History Alive Project and we are sure that our followers would LOVE to hear some of the stories you may have. What were your thoughts about the school (seniors) having this event? Was it as scary as you were led to believe? What were some of the stories you may have heard about initiation before entering your freshmen year?

NOW YOU KNOW!

Two of our History Alive Project volunteers, Dave and Ruth Amundson, recently were gifted a set of "Norge-logo" raised-logo glass beverage glasses from friends who visited them from Norway.

This logo, now 124 years old, has a unique history worth telling.

Pre-1905, Norway and Sweden were a Union in the 1890s and early 1900s, Sweden decided to make it actually illegal to call Norway (Norge), and in many instances doing so was punishable by death!

To protest, companies like the "Norgeglasset" aka "Norway Glass Work," introduced a glass jar to help households preserve vegetables, meat and fruits. Many companies started labeling everything they made with NORGE words.

The raised NORGE lettering functioned as a brand trademark and just so happened to coincide with a period of intense Norwegian pride! The glasses shown carry on this logo even today with these contemporary drinking glasses.

Today, authentic vintage NORGE glass items are still distributed via Hadeland Glassverk; the real old ones are highly collectable.

NOW YOU KNOW!

Dave and Ruth Amundson had a great surprise today Lise and two of her daughters from Jessheim, Norway paid a surprise visit. It was so great to see them and talk about many things that have changed both here and in Norway since their last visit.

We all enjoyed the Freia Melkesjokolade bars and the Twist candy that they brought as gifts.

Of course, we had to talk about Norway's terrific showing at the World Soccer Championships in the U.S. The Kragsets were able to fly over an watch their team as well as to be in Oslo, joining the thousands of others who welcomed the Norway team back home in front of the Palace.

NOW YOU KNOW!

No matter if they were the QUEENS of the office or QUEENS of the school library, we all know that the whole school day and everything else had to go through their office, their answering of a zillion phone calls and of course, the same number of questions!

Who were the secretaries on board when you were a student at Westby? What stories do you have?

As the new school year starts soon, History Alive Project sincerely thanks all school secretaries as we know you are really the QUEENS!
